How to clear three common malfunctions

Hey guys. I have another "How To" for you to look at if you'd like. This one concerns clearing three common malfunctions. Failure to fire, stovepipes, and Double feeds. I made some videos to try and explain how these malfunction drills will look when done in real time. These aren't the only ways to clear these malfunctions but they are solid methods that have been tested by myself in combat and competition situations. They are not the same thing but a FTE is definitely part of what can make a double feed. In other words you can have a FTE without having a double feed but you cannot have a double feed without having a FTE.

This isn't always the case with rifles and the rare pistol. You can actually have the noses of two rounds both trying to get into the chamber in those cases. This malfunction required a tool to clear though so you are basically screwed. You had better find cover and pull out your backup weapon.

I applaud you donating your time and effort to make these, but I have to disagree with your version of clearing a stovepipe.

I assert that clearing a stove pipe is no different than clearing a failure to fire. Tap, Invert, Rack, Assess.

Running your hand along the top edge of the firearm, without grabbing the slide, is a fine motor skill and if you do not perform the function perfectly you run the chance of slicing your hand open from the exposed brass.

What can make it even worse is if the brass is split from firing. Now you have a VERY sharp edge that will most likely cut your hand.

Peforming the stove pipe clear as if you had a FTF will ensure you do not get cut and it uses the standard gross motor skill set.

Lastly, after watching the video, I can see you cleared the stovepipe but the firearm most likely remains empty. This could be a problem if the next round was not in process of being chambered when the stove pipe occured. If the slide was indeed short stroked and a round was not pushed into the breach, then you now have an empty gun. Not a good thing in a gun fight.

Using the standard Tap, Invert, Rack and Assess assures the shooter that the stopage has been cleared and a fresh round is chambered.

Cartridges are cheap. Rack a new one.

Unless your hand falls ontop of the casing and gets cut. That's why I sweep. With a sweep you are sliding ontop of the slide instead of grabbing it. Also, when you grab the slide as if performing immediate action you run the risk of holding the stovepipe in place by topping it with the palm. It really is not that fine a motor skill either. A fine motor skill is generally something you have to manipulate with fingers or do accurately. You are not using any fingers knees or toes with the sweep.

HOWEVER, if you have a method that works for you then do it! Like I said in my blog, my way isn't the only way.

Actually you are right about this. It is something I missed and have updated my tutorial to address it. About 1/3 of the time my Glock 17 fails to chamber a new round. This is a serious issue. Thank you.
