1911 problem..help!

After firing and cleaning my SA GI today I could take it back off safe during a function test. I noticed the detent that holds the slide release on one side and the saftey lever on the other side cants out away from the frame and the detent slides over the safety when placed on safe making it impossible to to push back down. I can manually push the detent in and place the weapon back off safe and take it apart. I took off the grips and i can take the detent off the frame. Is that suposed to happen? I put it all back together and the same thing. Was something holding it there before that I dont know about?

Your plunger tube has come out of the frame. It is staked in place and you need the proper tool to fix it right. Since it's a Springfield, you should call and get a shipping number. Take it to a UPS hub and ship it back to Geneseo. It may take anywhere from a week to a month but they'll fix it.

Your other option is to take it to a smith and let them put a new plunger tube on it.

SA will fix it free of charge, and in most cases cover shipping. Sorry to hear that happened though. Kruzr's diagnosis is 100% correct, and you could take it to a smith if you're in a rush but it'd cost you, whereas SA will handle it at their expense. They're good about keeping the customer happy.

Good gunsmith - quick job

Most well equipped gunsmiths have the tool that is used to stake plunger tubes. With the right tool and the knowledge to use it, the job takes about one minute. You need to find a gunsmith near you that can do this, and take the gun to him.

I had a 1911 once with a plunger tube that was slightly loose and wiggled a bit. The gunsmith I use fixed it quickly and didn't charge me, because I give him other, more substantial tasks for which he charges me.

Even Bolsa should be able to stake a plunger without doing any harm . They aren't known for being cheap but neither are any gunsmiths worth anything. Be sure to ask how long they will need the gun.

Your best bet may still be to ship it back to Springfield. ook the gun over and if you notice anything else that needs fixin', you can get that taken care of at the same time.
