    best 1911 under $1000

im looking for a 1911 under $1000. i heard the Smith N Wesson 1911's are one of the best 1911's out-of-box. any truth to that. if so, what other options do i have. im looking mainly for reliability and accuracy. i will not be shooting bullseye, but want it to be accurate. if you guys can help me out, i would appreciate it.

A loaded Springfield Armory will do you just fine and you can use the rest of the money for ammo. I bought my SA Operator for a little under $1000. Not saying its the best at that price but its way up there.

I recommend both Kimber (based on first-hand experience) and Springfield Armory (based on second-hand reports).

                          Accurate, reliable 1911 under $1000

I believe that 98% of the full size, steel 1911s from the reputable manufacturers will be more accurate than most shooters can achieve, and will be quite reliable. The 1911 design seems to lend itself to tight lockup of the parts and good accuracy. An individual gun from any manufacturer can be a lemon, of course, but most of them are quite good.

Quite a few people have mentioned Kimber on this thread, and they certainly have a good reputation. For $1000 you could also buy a full size Colt Gold Cup Trophy, S&W 1911, or a couple of other brands that would probably work very well. But the main ingredient in accurate shooting is your own skill, and that just takes practice and good technique.

Get a standard Colt 1911. It'll do you fine.

The S&W 1911s are great too - never hear of any problems.

I do hear quite a few problems with various Kimbers and these appear not necessarily to be related to mag quality. With the number of reports and the believability of the sources, I'd stay away from a Kimber myself.

If you are interested in a gun that will shoot better than just Combat accuracy, the above is not good advice. A Colt will do what a Colt was built to do........shoot a 5" group at 25 yards. You will have to contend with a conventional grip safety and not a ergonomic beavertail. I like my Colt for what it is.........but it isn't a target shooting gun.

I get a kick out of people who bash guns they've never owned or simply rely on what they "hear." I base my 1911 opinions on what I own, what I've shot, and what people bring me to fix.

One thing to consider is the S&W still uses an external extractor that is proprietary to S&W....they are the only ones who make the part. Kimber are now back to internal after the debacle they went through with the externals.
