AR pistol question

Am i understanding this correctly, just because of the round, .223 or .556, i can't use my legal 30 round mags in an AR pistol without a bullet button?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, i know a lot about AR rifles and CA laws but i'm pretty green when it comes to the AR pistols.

From my understanding it's not the round that's the problem. I don't think the pistol AW laws care about centerfire versus rimfire.

It's the fact that it's considered a pistol. An AR pistol naturally has the magazine well outside the pistol grip. As such that's seen as an evil pistol feature and you need the bullet button. And since you've got a bullet button on there you're now limited to 10 round mags. If you could stuff the AR mag well into the pistol grip somehow I think you'd not need the bullet button and could then use legally owned 30 round mags. At that point it's not really an AR pistol though.

Hope this helps. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will chime in shortly. And the flowchart probably covers this too. I'm too lazy to check right now.

No, you were right with the "magazine well outside the pistol grip" part. That needs to be fixed mag and can only hold 10 rounds. Even if its rimfire.

You could use thirty rounders in an AR pistol without a fixed mag if the firearm is not semiautomatic. Bolt action or charging required between shots.
