Going to Vegas

I'm going to Vegas for the weekend and would like to bring my handgun to go shooting. I know the California rules for traveling with a hangdun, does Vegas (Nevada) have anything in particular? Am I allowed to? Do I need to register it there somewhere? I'll only be there for a few days. I'm not planing on "carrying" it and I'm fine leaving it locked in my vehicle.
and... Do you have any favorite ranges out there? maybe an outdoor one?

American Shooters has a nice range. But if you come out here, you should definitely go check out the Clark County Shooting Park. 7 bucks to shoot all day. When you see it, you'll think to yourself: "I could only wish [insert CA county name here] would build something like that."

Technically you can open carry in Nevada. That said, you may get harassed - and possible arrested/detained/weapon confiscated if you travel through Boulder City and North Las Vegas.

Clark County technically requires you to register handguns...but generally don't enforce it on visitors. You're supposed to have a "blue card" to prove your registration.

Carry loaded and exposed if you like, and you can keep it loaded in your glove box. Just don't carry it concealed on your person (under clothing) without a permit. Clark county's registration requirement is not enforceable until your gun has been in the county for 60 days, and the Boulder City and North Las Vegas gun laws have been nullified by the state. Enjoy your gun rights, but leave them at the border when you come back.

when i travel in nevada i always have a loaded gun in my center console.... i love that state...

Glove box and a closed center console is still considered concealed if I am not mistaken? You can have it laying on your passenger seat (preferably in a holster) fully loaded with a round in the chamber though. I need to brush up on OC law myself.

I do know North LV has its own weird laws that conflict with Clark Co. and the state NRS's. I dont know if I would want to play lawyer on the street if I were stopped there? If you are not sure just call the Metro non emergency number. 702-828-3111

Open Carry is legal but I wouldnt recommend it. Even in Nevada there are still get jumpy folks that call 911 about a man with a gun even though the man is not doing anything other than walking down a quiet street exercising his 2nd Amd. rights.

As far as shooting. I hate going to ranges that restrict all forms of shooting down to just standing and shooting and no double taps or rapid fire of any kind. I almost always take a short trip up the 95 to mile marker 103 just past the Indian res. called the wash outs by us locals. Perfect natural 20 foot berms to shoot into on BLM land. My 2wd truck makes in in there just fine.

Here is a good view of the washouts. Its just me and a buddy shooting my shotguns out there.

If you do go to a range the new outdoor shooting park is hard to beat as others have mentioned. I havent gone yet but when it cools down next month I'll check it out myself. Its said to be the biggest of its kinda west of the rockies?

Law changed a few years back.

Residents of Clark County have 72 hours to register any handguns they acquire.

Non-residents of Clark County have to register their handguns only if they stay in Clark County for longer than 60 days.
If a non-resident of Clark County stays in Clark County for less than 60 days, then they are not required to register any handguns they possess.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their replies. So it looks like a short trip is fine. I may try to check out the Clark County Shooting Park. Maybe another time I'll try to hunt down the "Washout".

Just FYI, the washout is maybe 15 to 20 minutes down the road from the CC shooting range. Both are out in the desert. CC shooting range is in the North and the washouts are in the NW.

Go to the Clark County Shooting park.

It will definitely open your eyes to what a REAL shooting range should be.

Or go out to desert (washout, sandpits, apex, etc.) and blast away.
