    Weirdest P226 I've ever seen...

Story starts from my P228's frame rail split. I sent the P228 to SIG and they replace it with a two-tone P226R with DAK trigger; sent the P226 back to have it change to DA/SA trigger, upon arrival I fired a couple hundred rounds, then the magazine release stop pop-off because the magazine release hole on the frame of my replacement gun is machined too wide to hold the release stop properly. Off it went to SIG again and they replace it with another one. Upon receiving it... I have to say it's the weirdest P226 I've ever seen. Well, here's a picture.

I called it "Frenkenstein SIG" because I've never seen anything like this on SIG's catalog before. It appears to have the P226 NAVY slide, P226 ST stainless steel frame, and SIG Elite wood grip couple with SIG's short trigger. It's now a nice looking reverse two-tone gun. Has anyone know that SIG made anything like this before?

    Nice Charilie

I actually like it. It gives it personality from other SIG guns, but from SIG's thousand variations I'm not too sure whether or not it's available already to the market or if yours is one of a kind.

Sig used to do GOTM (gun of the month) that was special two-tone reversals, and triggers and what not. I'm not too sure about it, but the Sig guru's on sig form can possibley figure it out. The gun looks nice though!

I am waiting for my 10 day wait to end for my P-226 so that it can join it's breathern of P-225 and P-220. All West German by birth. hmm at this rate I'm gonna have to find a g/f that lives in what used to be called West Germany :-P.

I think it looks great. It is interesting that they chose to replace a P228 with a P226rDAK, when that proved to be problematic they turned to a 226ST frame.

One would think they would replace a P228 with a P229, no? There doesn't seem to be any method to the madness...

How many rounds were shot through it before the frames peeled off? I think that is great that Sig replaced the P228, even if I do not know their logic behind what it was replaced with.

I consider myself a Sig maniac, and I do not remember ever seeing a P226ST Navy reverse two tone for sale.

To elaborate the story a little bit:

When I was offered the replacement first time, I had a few choices: P229 .40S&W, P229 .357SIG, or P226 in 9mm. I don't want to complicate my ammo selection in my guns, especially when I hate .40 and .357SIG with a passion, so I chose the P226 9mm. SIG didn't tell me it was going to be two-tone DAK gun, otherwise I would've told them to switch it over to DA/SA before sending it to me. I asked if they can give me a P229 in 9mm, but they said it was not available (i.e. no CPO P229 9mm in stock) and my guess was their customer service was evaluated by how fast they turn around the case, so SIG said I need to make a choice NOW...

As for how many rounds before the frame split, I'd say about 5K which was a big surprise for me. My first P228 went through about 20K before it got stolen, 2nd P228 went through about 30K before I "retired" it. The P228 that has frame split on me was bought new in 2004 and I expect equivalent service life, so I must say I was very disappointed when I found the frame cracked. Here's a picture of the P228 frame:

What is the proof code (aka date code) on the cracked P228 if you can recall?

I've got mixed feeling on your FrankenSIG. It's nice that you are the only one with a P226R ST Navy Reverse Two-Tone with Elite grips, a collector maybe? It's sad because SIG CS did not provide you with the best solution but rather a stop gap solution (just to kill this issue with your original SIG). IMHO, a P229, P229R, CPO P229, or CPO P228 are the best options. I'll score them 3 out of 5.

I bought one just like that (except the Navy slide and the grip) in 40 SW from Turner's couple years ago.

aca72, there was no date code for that P228, if you are referring to the two character date code that usually found under the slide. It seems SIG change their manufacturing process sometime after Y2K so the P228 that has a cracked frame only has laser etched serial number, and lack of any other stamping/marks that you would usually found on Pre Y2K P228s.

Yes... it may be one of the kind, could be a collector's item... that still won't stop me from shooting the crap out of it as it's already marked as CPO...

SDshooter, what is the model of your gun?

                              CPO = Certified Pre-Owned. Best deal on Sigs :-) Picked up a P-220 for 505 shipped and a P-226 for 475
