I have the original rubber (Hogue?) grips on my 686P revolver but the upper portion of the grip interferes with my HKS speedloaders. Anyone have a suggestion for grips? I don't even really know where to start. I've been shooting revolver in IDPA more and more and the grips are just frustrating.

Grip recommendations for S&W 686P

Pachmayr Gripper Professional if you have average to somewhat large hands, Pachmayr Gripper if you have large to very large hands. Even though I have pretty large hands, I prefer the Professional model with the open backstrap on all my full size S&W revolvers.

Thanks for the tip. Do you know if speedloaders will clear the top of the grip? By the look of it, it appears that it will. Just curious if you have "hands-on" experience with using them with HKS speedloaders.
Because I have a 7-shot, I am limited to using the HKS speedloaders.Comment

I like the regular wood target grips. Don't know how they would work on the 686+ but thy are great on my 566.Comment

Hands on.. yes, over 20 years worth. I first started using these as a LEO in 1987 on Model 19 and 66 revolvers. I've used them on K, L, and N frame revolvers and even have a set of closed backstrap Grippers on a Ruger Redhawk to this day. HKS and all manner of Safariland loaders all work just fine for me.
ETA: Two on my Model 19's below, Gripper professional on the right, OEM oversized target on the left. I carried both on the street over the years. This view should give an idea of how much clearance there is on the loading side.

Awesome. Thanks for your help. Looks like I will probably go with the gripper model because I have very large hands and it will cover up a scar on the gun on the backstrap. Nice wheelguns you got there.Hands on.. yes, over 20 years worth. I first started using these as a LEO in 1987 on Model 19 and 66 revolvers. When I shot revo in IDPA, I preferred a smoother grip. Faster reloads. And shooting 38spl loads is pretty tame recoil.

I really like the Hogue Fancy grips for revolvers with the contrasting butt cap. Great looking, functional grips.

Forgot to suggest that you can also sand the rubber down a bit.I have the original rubber (Hogue?) grips on my 686P revolver but the upper portion of the grip interferes with my HKS speedloaders. I hear the Jerry Miculek grips are great. I plan to buy a set one of these days.Comment

Try the Miculek grips they are hard to beat with S&W revos. On my Ruger GP100 I stick with the stock rubber grips, they are fast enough for me and provide enough clearance for the speedloaders. The wise man said just find your place
