Serial numbers?

In a lot of post either for sale or just showing gun porn a lot of people black out the serial number.

What is the purpose of doing so or are they just paranoid?

i think its just paranoia, our license plates and vin numbers are exposed to the world everyday by anyone who walks past them...I don't see why my guns serial number should be protected more then my cars vin/license plate

Strictly paranoia...one guy who posts guns on the net told me he does it so some criminal doesn't see the number and stamp the same number on a gun he uses to commit a crime...so in theory, if they find the gun...the number comes back to him

I asked him if he lays awake at night thinking of this crap...lol

Wouldn't it have to be the same make/model in that case?

And wouldn't it be pretty easy to show the cops your gun with a FACTORY SERIAL NUMBER when they've got the other one? If it came down to it, wouldn't the manufacturer be able to easily tell which one is legit?

Is there any evidence this has ever happened? I mean, ever? In the history of the world? Maybe some professional ninja assassin totally did it in a movie at some point.

You're applying logic to the actions of a paranoid...I know it's stupid and makes no sense...but it made sense to him...lol

At least in the watch world this is done to combat fakes. I don't think anyone would be stupid enough to do that with firearms.

I guess if you had access to the right equipment the serial number could trace back to you, but again I am paranoid

i guess if you are trying to keep your web identity private, you dont want someone (i.e. LEOs) with the ability to look up the info to find out who you really are.

like the others said, a little bit of paranoia. but sometimes its warranted.

If a LEO wants to find out who you are online, they don't need a serial number from a gun to do it.

how do you suspect that they would do it? subpoena data from calguns servers? i dont think they can do that without probable cause. even then, i doubt CGN will give that up that easily. a visible serial number allows them to run it without any external help.

I was told (or read, or overheard, or something) that the reason is so someone else can't report the gun stolen and then claim that you took it ("Officer, I was browsing the Web and just happened to come across a photo of my gun!"). Makes a little more sense than a criminal stamping the serial number on their own throwaway... after what, removing the original serial number first ()? Anyway, if you happen to retain all your paperwork from firearms transactions (hint hint), then anyone making such a claim will suddenly find out how badly their little plan can backfire.

Or heck, maybe they don't even have to claim you stole it... maybe they just need serial numbers for false insurance claims or something. Who knows?

Anyway, I guess it never hurts to be cautious in any online presence, right?

I finally got to post my first picture of my two guns, I did in fact try to hide the serial numbers by taking pictures of the gun on the side with no #s, but one of my gun has the #s on both sides! So I was like, screw it, and posted my pictures anyways.
