Noticed that SIG no longer produces the P228. Anybody know the reason why. I've got one purchased back in 2001 and pretty happy with it. Been out of the handgun loop for quite awhile. Thanks.

P228's stamped slide was not strong enough to handle .357sig and .40SW after a good use. So P229 got made, with milled slide(?) and it proved to be better. As a streamlining of production, they got rid of P228.Comment

IMO, P228 has better balance compare to P229. Since I am not interested in .40 or .357 SIG, I selected P228 instead of P229.
I can understand why SIG got rid of P228, since P229 has 9mm and stamp steel slide are phase-out in all other product line, does not seem logical from logistic stand point while everything (P220/226/229/239) all uses mill stainless steel slide while keeping P228 with stamp slide. Seems like they only make limited runs for US military as M11 and, and occasionally we see some of those made available to open market.

Depends on who you ask, P228 is still being made.
I think the P228 with stamped slide and non-rail frame is still available in Europe. A batch was recently imported into the US.
The P228R is available as it's pretty much the current production of M11. It's basically a P228 stamped slide on a P229R frame.Comment

I'm actually quite curious and wouldn't mind acquiring a rail-less one. Just need to wait for the next time TGS or some other supplier gets a good batch.Comment

Glad I got one from Turners not long ago, even if it is a used Zurich police trade in. Despite heavy finish wear, the guts are nice and minty.

Nah, I'll eventually get my hand in a 228. I think the slide profile of 229, is ugly as sin compare to the classic 228 slide.Taiwan born, Chinese descent, red white and freaking blue America citizen.
