1911 hammer bite solutions?

Yesterday I put 500 rounds through the RIA GI 1911. All was good (except for a batch of bad bullets) until I started flinching from the damn hammer bite. I now have a large open wound in the web of my hand from it. Aside from installing a beavertail/commander hammer is there a fix? I mean the GI colts didnt give hammer bite that Im aware of, so what was different on them?

I got tired of the hammer bite myself, so I installed a new hammer/beaver. As far as the GI Colts not having hammer bite issues, i'm pretty sure they do, depending on the hands. but i've never shot one so I can't tell you first hand.

I got a WC hammer and beavertail combo and they dropped in with no issues.

If the size of your hands and or your grip are leading to the bite. I think badmonkey's response is the best way to go. Much easier to change those parts then your grip. I actually saw more then a few GI 1911 hammer bites in the Army.
The beaver tail was invented for a reason, to alow the highest possible grip without suffering hammer bite.

Since OP doesn't want beaver tail (what kind of man are you?) the only solution is to stop choking up on the grip and increase your grip strength to compensate. Pudgy hands contribute to hammer bite, losing some weight may work for you as it did recently for a friend who hated 1911's.

My grandfather used to hold his 1911 like a fencing foil, using his fingers and the abductor/flexor pollicis brevis to control the pistol. He was also a point shooter so YMMV.

Most 1911s have slightly different dimensions in several areas across manufacturers. Hammer and grip safety are two things that can actually vary in size quite a bit... Relatively. A Colt might not bite you but a RIA might. I would say either install a beaver tail/extended/bobtail grip safety (Which ever suits you most aesthetically) and keep on shooting.

See I was told by manyb that they never got bite from Army 1911's. Oh well. Guess I will go with a beavertail. Sad because the spur hammer looks so damn good.

is it just me or a disproportionate number of gun owners carry more than a few extra pounds? I was starting to head that way so I got my @ss on p90x before it got out of control. I have met a lot of calgunners who could use a little tony horton themselves.

I think the beavertail is the first and one of the best upgrades over a GI 1911. Without one, I suffer from hammer bite and I'm not able to control the pistol as well.

I've currently got a Springfield GI project going with which I'm going to bob the hammer and recontour the stock grip safety tail thingy. The hope is to eliminate hammer bite and keep from having to modify the frame. I'll post pics when it's done, but it'll be a while. I'm still buying tools.

Hammer bite is the equivalent of a bad sunburn after a great day at the beach, or burning the roof of your mouth with a hot slice of pizza...you'll suffer for a few days, but the next time someone asks you to do it you won't hesitate for a second.

You could try installing an old Colt, "duckbill" grip safety.
