Definitely shop them around. As stated above Turners had them for $200, then $269, then $239 and now $269 all in the last few months.

I just scored a barely used 22/45 blued 5.5" bull in the marketplace for a little over $200 just two weeks ago.

You CANNOT go wrong with the Ruger .22! Even if you spend 20 or 30 more on one, just buy it, trust me. With the fun you're going to have and the $ you will save on ammo it's worth it to have it asap. Ive gotten carried away spending hours online and driving around from shop to shop on guns I know I wanted anyway and it's just ridiculous. Buy it and have fun!

Rugger MK seires or Buckmark. IMO the top two leading models in 22lr pistols.

Other people may knock them, but I really enjoy the S&W 22A as well. They have some pretty cool models, some with picatinny rails integrated on the gun. Some stainless and two tone steel/black models out there with decent laminate target grips. The bull barrel 5.5" in stainless with the target grips may be my next pistol. I want a cheaper .22 for taking others out while I use my Ruger. Compared to $450+ for a hunter or competition model, the $250 looks pretty good.

Just purchased one from Turners for the $199 special they had not too long ago. Bargain at that price. Dropped in a VQ extractor, sear, and rear sight, plus the grips shown above (mds2004's, but in white). Done.

It's a great pistol to learn on, that's for sure. I've said it a million times: if you can shoot a rimfire accurately, you can shoot any centerfire accurately, as the technique is the same (sight picture, trigger control, breathing, etc.). The only thing different is the felt recoil after the bullet has already left the muzzle. As such, I'd recommend AGAINST the temptation to red dot it. Yes, it's TONS of fun, but it's now a plinker and not as great for actual iron sights practice. If you're gonna red dot it, buy two.

A .22lr is a must-have in any pistolero's collection. You will end up with it and your 9mm eventually. Don't even try to fight it.

              A .22 plinker is a must have. I went with the S&W 622

              It's too late, it's over.

Get the Ruger MK III in stainless with the long fluted barrel (7 7/8 inches?). Fantastic handgun and the best looking one on the market in my opinion. They are a little hard to break down but really don't need to be broken down more than once a year anyway. I bought mine the day I went into get a .45 and saw it hanging there on the wall. They were a little hard to come by 2-3 years ago... It's one pistol you will never get rid of...! Regards

You'll eventually buy and keep both, and for good reason -- rimfires (whether buckmark or ruger) are just plain friggin' fun. Nothing like an afternoon with a few bricks of ammo and some steel spinner targets!

Well I took everyone's advice sooner than expected and ordered a Mark III. I went to my favorite local store since they've been so helpful, and I feel I got a fair price on a great pistol. For anyone keeping score, I decided not to go too overboard and buy what I fell in love with from range rentals. I got a Mark III Target Bull barrel. It'll hit the shop in 2 days and then I can join the ongoing 10 day jail thread!.

I went by Wallmart and saw 22lr 550 bulk pack. They're hollowpoint, so does that mean I can still shoot them at the local range?
I really want to thank everyone on the forum for all of the pictures shared, personal opinions and tips. At this rate I see myself as an active community member already.

The hollow point .22lr won't be a problem...buy a bunch. Congrats on your new toy.

Thanks cuz I just spent 30 more then I could have on an impulse buy KP-512.

It's my 2nd MKIII and this time I'm keeping it. (I think) I haven't even fired it yet.

How bout bird-shot in a semi auto? I'd love to hunt quail with it or dare I say "clays" with a .22 hand gun?

                          Congrats OP and good choice!

Congrats! Now that you've taken the plunge, you will DEFINITELY be needing one of these: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct...m_campaign=649

And be sure to visit www.rimfirecentral.com for all the latest tips, tricks, and upgrades. One of the best things about Rugers is the tremendous aftermarket support, with tons of drop-in DIY upgrades available. You can definitely leave it as is and it'll serve you well, but the option is definitely there as well.

One of my favorite vendors for aftermarket parts is www.rimfiresports.com, mainly because they have a good selection, decent prices, and free shipping in the US.

                            Enjoy!

                              Hollowpoints no problem.

A lot of people will recommend CCI MiniMag for the first few hundred rounds. A little more pop till things loosen up a bit.

No idea if it works or not, but I took my brand new but cleaned 22/45 to the range & sent 100 MiniMag solids downrange with zero malfunctions.

You can go through 100 rds pretty quick with 5 x 10 rd mags...
