I will add another to the S&W or Ruger crowd. A 686 or GP100 will be a more definite good buy. Not saying a Taurus cant be, I am sure most of them work fine, but I have yet to see a GP100 break and I have seen 2 Taurus revolvers lose timing on the cylinder and one had the rear sight fall off.

Bought a Taurus Tracer 357 in January 2009. Bad out of the box, severe timing issues. It took two trips to the repair depot at about 3 1/2 weeks per trip to get repaired. It was a dangerous gun. They did get the repairs done. The shop had 2 other Trackers, both had similar problems and they stopped carrying Taurus after my experience. They got a real crappy answer from Taurus at the Shot Show in 2009 which was the driving force for them to stop carrying that brand.

Now, having got it repaired, it's an OK revolver. The trigger is not any where what a Smith 686 is. The porting helps a bit with recoil, but that may not be the best option for a self defense gun - noise, particles, flash (night vision).

I tell people to join the taurusarmed blog and then look at the complaint section. You don't get to see the complaint section unless you join.

I agree with others, a used Smith or Ruger for that price range may be less headaches.

Okay on my end I've made up my mind. If it was for me I might try the Taurus. But, this is for a friend and you know how stuff can come back in your face. After reading some other threads one of my personal favorite brands got continual majority rave reviews for reliable, built like a tank, good shooter etc. > Ruger - GP100.

I got some great info here and appreciate all the knowledgeable commentary which helped me to decide.

        Thanks!
