San Diego Police Range Class?

I recall someone here was in a class at the SDPD Range.

How did it go? Was it worthwhile? Would you recommend it to others? Did you learn anything? Instruction good? When is the next class starting?

I've taken the intro class before and it was pretty much for beginners. It involved instruction on how to clean, and safely handle/shoot the Ruger revolvers they provided us with. Most of it was shot from the 7 or 10 yard line.

Further in to the class we got to shoot 5 rounds or so out of an AR. OMG!

After taking the class several times (just for the relatively cheap shooting time) it became kinda boring. This was a few years back but I believe its the same instructor.

In short, the class was good (not great), but it accomplished my main objectives - formal training, meeting others with similar interests, and set a time for me to go to the range (instead of fitting it in between everything else and not going for weeks, if not months, at a time).

One of the main reasons I took it was to get some sort of formal training under my belt for a relatively low price. Now I have a certificate that says I did just that.

I met some good dudes - including a Calgunner, which was cool. I was amazed by the cross-section of people there. Young/old, male/female, and many ethnicities and nationalities.

I liked that I got to shoot outdoors at regular intervals and saw some improvement in my skills.

I thought the instructors were fine. A little misinformed on some things, including the latest gun laws. For example, they told the class that the 50 round limit was part of the law (AB 962) that was passed. I actually copied the Calguns wiki page and made enough copies for the class and gave them to the instructor, but he never handed them out...

You could only shoot targets at 25 yards because of how the range is set up. But, you can go check your targets while others are shooting at adjacent targets because of how the range is set up. It has a tunnel down the middle and the targets are on stands that you can raise and lower manually. This actually freaked me out a little at first, but I got used to it.

I think someone mentioned on the previous thread that you probably won’t get a lot of instruction unless you’re very new to shooting and/or having trouble hitting the target. I found this to be true. I did ask for some specific advice though and they gave it to me and it helped my shooting. So they are accessible, if you seek them out.

Overall, I would still recommend the class, especially for those that are brand new to shooting. The next one starts on 9/7. Here’s a link:

I am still considering the advanced class they teach, but I am also considering doing an advanced class at private range. I know this will be more expensive, but I suspect it is also better, more comprehensive, and probably has more individual instruction.

Thanks for the cool write up!

The advanced course is worthwhile simply because you are able to do more things with respect to course of fire.

You are separated from the Basic class if it's on the same evening and usually go to the 50 yard side in which you will learn timed and rapid fire from 3 to 15 yards at silhoutte targets. It is much more challenging, as it should be, and interesting because it's more like the real deal shooting under adverse conditions.

The folks that are in advanced class sign up over and over because it's fun.

I have not been to this class for quite some time, about 4 years, but I know the instructors and would agree that not all of the information is correct regarding current laws 100% of the time.
