I contend the S&W 460 or the S&W 500 is the caliber of choice for bear hunting in a handgun.

This subject has been beaten to death guys. Most outdoors people would advise you to carry bear spray. Save the guns for humans, snakes, etc.

I have killed a lot of snakes.. Shot loads from a 44 mag revolver work really well. The other 5 rounds in the cylinder can be solids. Solids work well on humans etc.

Very few handgun problems that can't be solved with a 44 mag.

Technically its a revolver not a pistol, as the chamber is integral to the barrel on a pistol I know the term is interchanged casually at times but this is a place where we can talk as men.

However I think its a very nice revolver you have and that is a scary bear picture you posted, so you get extra credit!

Personally Im with the "nuke it from orbit, its the only way to be sure" folks in regards to Alaskan Brown Bears. I'd bring a shotgun with slugs or a high power rifle with very heavy bullets.

Check out the 460 rowland in an xd or glock. that would be my choice. 44 mag power in a hi capacity pistol.

As a backup to a 45-70 guide gun.

Yup! I'd be happy with that 4" Redhawk in 44 mag as an all around hiking/fishing gun. The gun is not your first defense, it's what's between your ears and keeping a high situational awareness.
