    Lock/ Safe question

Hi everyone this is my first post here on Calguns. Been lurking for a little over a month... so go easy on me. I just did the transfer on my first gun today for a Glock 23. The guy who did the transfer told me that locks are only valid for 30 days. I'm still a little confused... after the 30 days what exactly happens? I am going to get a safe with my next paycheck but do I need to report anything or whatever? Thanks.

A dealer cannot deliver a firearm unless it is accompanied by a safety device.

If you choose to buy a lock to satisfy that requirement, you must provide a receipt for that lock dated within 30 days prior to the delivery of the gun.

Usual procedure is: on the day of the delivery, stop at Walmart and buy a gun lock that fits the new gun. Bring the lock and receipt to the FFL. Show them to the FFL, and pick up your gun. Leave. Go home and properly store your new gun. Go back to Walmart and return the lock.

The Feds do not yet have a way to accept a safe for handguns, so a safe currently works only for long guns.

See the Wiki article on locks.

My glock came with a lock inside the case. I believe the standard new glock comes with a manual, brush, two magazines, speed loader, and a lock. I may be wrong and maybe my gun store is just awesome?

Most firearms manufacturers are including locks in the cases now--at least Sig is.

I recently bought a new Sig and it came with a lock and even more recently bought a new Glock (pick it up Thursday!) and it comes with one too...

isn't there a gun safe waiver of some short in lieu of the gun lock or is the gun safe waiver only good for ppt?

Gun safe works only for long guns - see article, blame BATF.

All 3 of my glocks came with a lock, did yours? Can you not use the lock it comes with in the box?

My understanding is that a unlocked handgun inside a locked container is considered legal - at least for CCW permit holders. Am I wrong?

                          Follow up question:

Does the lock have to be purchased from a 'store', or can you buy from anyone?

Basically, my question is can I buy a lock from my brother, have him write up a receipt and I use that for my lock? He's got locks from other purchases, has a safe and keeps them in them so they are superfluous to his security scenario.

If the statutes are mute about WHO you can purchase the lock from then it seems reasonable that you can purchase from anywhere/anyone as long as you get a dated receipt.

I may post this Q on the FFL forum to see how some local FFL's would treat a situation such as this. The thought of buying/displaying/returning a lock seems pretty absurd.

The lock has to be DOJ approved for California. You might be able to get away with it if you provided all the information about the lock, brand, model number, etc. However as with the other silly laws we have, I highly doubt it. Play it safe and go the walmart route, you can always return it after you aquire your handgun.

Only a little - unLOADED handgun inside locked container is for folks who do NOT have CCW. That's the PC 12026.1 and .2 exception for transporting legally so you don't get charged with concealed without a license.
