Springfield 1911 Operator home defense round?

I recently purchased a used Springfield Mil-Spec 1911 Operator (with the full rail) and have been wondering what kind of ammo to use for home defense. For target a standard 230 gr FMJ ball round is fine, but for home defense I would need something more. A JHP round makes sense but I have heard rumors that springfield 1911's, and especially the GI and Mil-Spec models, do not feed reliably with many JHP rounds.

Has anyone had decent experience with JHP's or other defense rounds in a SA 1911? If not what type of round do you suggest? Feedback regarding my gun model would be especially appreciated.

    Thanks!

I have both HST, PDX, Ranger... They all work with my Operator.

9 round of .451/.452 is going to ruin the targets day. My TRP Operator eats anything that the mag feeds her.

So far I've only used wwb HP's, but not a single issue with them.

The full length dust cover rail makes a world of difference in the "when I run out of bullets I'm going to beat you to death with the pistol" look that causes bad guys to run in fear, and lesser men to feel inadequate. It looks just plain beastly and the extra heft up front does help manage recoil a bit better. Plus, an angel told me that when God called JMB to heaven it was to build him a full rail 1911!

If it feeds 230 grain FMJ, try Speer Gold Dot in 230 grain. Gold Dots seem to be the closest thing to FMJ in terms of shape and feeding. It's also a good SD round.

I prefer Winchester Rangers for SD rounds, but if you're worried about HP feeding, try the Gold Dot first.

Speer Gold Dot 230 grain or Winchester Ranger 230 grain. Lots of LEO's use these, and they seem to perform consistently.

i have a gi and any hp from winchester feeds fine with mil surp mags. gold dots, hornady, or anything with less rounder nose profile feeds fine with wilson mags. i guess it's the proverbial shoot as much and see which one works best.

Simple test. Try several different types. If they work, choose one and test extensively. If none work, send to SA for warranty for feedramp polishing and throating. Test again.

I had some magsafe pre-fragmented +p+ rounds in a mag for 2 years. I always wanted to know how they where so I finally shot them! AMAZING! Im gonna get more of them to have when my operator is home sleeping from the range next to me. but till then, I have some winchester ranger T-series in the mag.
