    newbie question

I am trying to buy a handgun out of state can anyone tell me what the process is and how the taxes work? I know that I need to have a ffl but how do the taxes on a out of state sale work? Do you pay when you pay the dro fee? Thx for your time

In my experience, you only pay taxes if you are buying from a dealer. If it's a private party (even if an FFL ships it for them), you don't pay taxes on the purchase so long as the seller provides a signed/dated letter that states that 1.) they are not in business 2.) this is a private sale and 3.) this is an occasional sale. Good luck!

Now you are talking about a business

Looks more like the Governor will want his money

You are REQUIRED to pay a use tax on almost ANYTHING that you buy from out of state! This has been ignored by most people but now, California is hungry for money and looking for ways to collect these taxes other than you voluntarily paying them when you do your taxes. So, expect the FFL that you are transfering this at to collect "sales tax" on it although, it is really a "use tax".

That said, BEFORE your pay a penny, make sure that you can import that exact gun into the state. Is it on the California approved list? Does it meet the requirements for an exemption? Are you a LEO? If you answer "no" to all three of these questions, you will not get your gun and be out money and time. I'd start by finding a local FFL to do the transfer and have him guide you through what needs to be done.

Thx for the help I will talk to my ffl guy and make sure it all works. It is a ca legal gun I just found it cheaper out of state like almost everything else. Ca is a rip off so I figured it would be cheaper this way. Thx again

You're going to be paying shipping + transfer fee + DROS + use tax so make sure you do the math correctly beforehand.

How do you think that the State of California is adjusting gun prices? It's not. It's all about supply and demand.
