If it was made after 1957 the model numbers are stamped on the frame, inside the crane. Open the cylinder and have a look.
It appears to be some variation of a M&P or Military and Police revolver which would become the Model 10 in 1957.
As suggested above, the the smith and wesson forum should be of great assistance to you.

          Just a opinion. It looks like a .38 military & Police Model of 1905 - 2nd change.

I'd agree with Jerry's opinion based solely on appearance and only one side of the gun. The serial number should be able to pin it down closer if not certainly. It looks in fairly good shape and you might consider springing for a factory letter from S&W on it. The gun in the photo looks like it is a five inch barrel.... is it five inch or six inch?

The Military & Police Model of 1905 was the Model 10, long before it was called the Model 10. It was made from 1905 to 1942 when production was suspended for the war. It went through several changes, minor and major over time.

            First Change 1906-1908
            Second Change 1908-1909
            Third Change 1909-1915
            Fourth Change 1915-1942

When production resumed after the war it was called simply the Military & Police, or M&P, model. When model numbering was introduced in 1957, it became the Model 10.

What's the serial number on the butt of the gun? The letter & the first 4 numbers. The letter should be an S or C. Plus if the grips originally came with the gun, the serial number will be stamped onto the inside of the right stock. It looks like a 5 screw M&P.
