.38 is a rimmed revolver cartridge. .380 is a small autoloader cartridge. Both are the same bullet diameter, but that is where the similarities end...

Whoops, edit: .38 spl has a bullet diameter of .358" while the .380 auto has a bullet diameter of .356". There, had to be completely accurate.

One on the left is the 380acp and on the right is the 38 special.

You ought to pick up a copy of Cartridges of the World by Barnes. From the 11th Edition, we see that the 380 Automatic (also called the 9mm Kurz, 380 ACP, or 9x17mm) was invented for semi-automatic handguns in 1908. The .38 Special was introduced 1902 for revolvers. The 38 special will safely fire in a revolver chambered in 357 magnum (though not the reverse), yet the 380 ACP will not.

For more information, see the Wikipedia articles for the 380 Automatic and 38 Special respectively.

You'll find more similarities between 9mm and 380.

A good quick little read I think you will find helpful. Also Mr. Camp has many other articles you will find very informative.

38 spl or 38 super. not a fan of 380 IMO If you had to have a 38 spl why not a 357 mag

Just to confuse things even more, there's a .38 ACP that I've never actually seen any gun chambered in.

38 ACP lead to the 38 Super, which is loaded to a higher pressure and headspacing was moved to the case mouth instead of the rim. In fact the rim is not needed anymore and the result was the 38 Supercomp or 38 TJ. With the straight wall design of the Supercomp and no rims catching over each other the round is superb when feeding through double column/staggered magazines such as Para Ordnance and 2011 hi cap 1911s. All the research and prototyping was a courtesy of USPSA shooters and gunsmiths.
