    Qualifying Question

This question is aimed more at instructors, but if you know, please feel free to answer.

When qualifying with your pistol, for whatever reason, CCW, Guard Card, Open Carry, ETC. How do you score the persons target?

Basic Black Silohuette, with 7,8,9,10,X ring.

    10 shots @ 7 yds, 10 shots @ 10 yds, and 10 shots @ 15 yds.

    Score out of 300.

Just a curious question, as I saw my target and others, and didn't see how the score could be so close.

    Please let me know.

    Thanks.

Ops, pressed the send on accident! Fat fingers and small phone doesn't work well together!

You count the inner circle of what the bullet breaks. If a bullet hits the 9 ring but breaks the line of the 10 ring you count it as a 10.

It's scored to 250 with 50 rounds @ 5 points per shot in the X,10,9 and 8 zone with 0 points anywhere else. I believe you need a 200 or better for CCW qual and 220 or better for exposed firearm.

Initial Class & Semi-Annual Re-qualification Course of Fire

Stage 1: 15 yds 6 rounds in 30 seconds (any standing position).

        Stage 2: 07 yds 14 rounds in 45 seconds (includes 2 reloading: load 6, 6, and 2).

[Six rounds must be fired standing and eight rounds must be fired kneeling].

Stage 3: 07 yds 6 rounds in 10 seconds (any position).

        Stage 4: 07 yds 12 rounds in 25 seconds (includes reloading: 6 and 6).

Six rounds strong hand unsupported; reload, fire six weak hand unsupported.

        Stage 5: 05 yds 6 rounds: 3 rounds in 4 seconds in 2 stages.

        Stage 6: 03 yds 6 rounds: 2 rounds in 3 seconds in 3 stages.

It's too easy IMO and should either be 9 ring or better for 5 points.
My opinions are my own and do not represent the position of other companies I may be involved with.

i agree, 5 point inside the 9 ring or nothing...it's not like they're shooting very fast.

i like the any position in Stage 3 at 7 yards...the old rule of thumb was when given the option and if time allowed, go prone. you'd have a tiny little cluster of shots and still be done in half the time

i wonder how many folks throw shots in Stage 2, because they've never practiced shooting from kneeling

What I posted is one school's version (not mine).
I like to use each session as a chance to shoot as quickly as I can while accurately.

If you are a civilian, and you hit the target (yes, I mean anywhere on the paper) with every shot, while not violating any basic safety rules, you should qualify.

This is a right we are talking about, not a privilege.

If the best you can do is hit somewhere on the paper under this low stress environment, you should get some more training/practice before considering carrying to keep from hitting everything but the intended bad guy under duress.

i think we're talking about your right to be sued by whomever your uncontrolled bullet happens to hit...after all, you are responsible for whatever every bullet you launch hits

I agree! Even cops have to qualify to carry on duty, or ride the desk
