I am going to add to your question, and maybe someone will get two birds with one stone... I have a Van, and a motorcycle. There is no way to have two separate areas in a van, am I OK having gun at one end of the van while the ammo is at the other end? On the cycle, I have two locking sadle bags... Can I lick gun in one side and ammo in the other. It appears that Steelhead and I are both in CA if that matters.... (sory about hijacking your post )

The handgun just has to be in a locked case. It can be a cheap case with a brass padlock and be fine. The ammunition doesn't need to be separated, it just should not be in the same case as the handgun.

So if I have a range bag in mytrunk, its ok to have the ammo in the trunk as well, not just in the same range bag?

Well as long as the 'range bag' is locked, the ammo can be in the trunk with it, separate from it.

BTW, there really is no standard for 'gun cases' and locked storage, secure container, what-have-you. So I feel it's better to err on the safe side and have something reasonably substantial...

A gun rug with a lock on the zipper could be too egregious for a traffic stop and you conceivably might have to prove in court that that could indeed be considered a locked container - really this is only of significance if ammo were in same compartment as this questionable container (i.e., both in trunk) or if the gun in questionable locked 'container' were in passenger compartment.

I always wondered about transporting a gun to the range on my motorcycle. I have a sportsbike so I can't really keep a locked box in my small trunk (if you can call it a trunk). Is it okay to have the gun in a locked case inside my backpack to transport it to the range? Then carry the empty magazines in another part of my backpack? I guess I can carry it in a tank bag also but I don't really want to spend $$ on a tank bag that I'll hardly use.

yes, lots of bikers do this. you put your handgun in a locked case AND you can carry the empty mags in the same locked case, then you can carry ammo in
the backpack. if it has two compartments even better.

I don't think it was specificaly addressed but I will say I wouldnt put the pistol in the backpack even locked in a container, even without ammo. It seems a bit like concealed carry as it is on your person. You ammo can go anywhere to my knollege, including in your pocket. As far as I know there are no laws at all regarding ammo (exception: armor piercing, tracer, etc, or keeping it in the gun).
I drive a POS 83 toyota starlet hatchback (yes, 58 hp) and I cant even get my rifle case in the car without the case coming up between the two front seats. But I just throw a pad lock on the plastic case and keep the ammo in a range bag on the passenger side floor. Though I have not encountered the fuzz, I can't see them giving me too much grief. Additionally I keep my bolt and mags in the bag with the ammo.

I think it is really about not having at your ready.
