    how many mags?

Given the CA 10 round mag capacity regulation, how many pistol mags for my PX4 .40 and Saiga .308 I should buy?

How many mags of the 10 rounder do you guys normally carry? Or recommend on having on hand?

My Saiga .308 is my SHTF, i keep 500 round around but only have 1 mag atm, how many mags should I keep on hand?

I start with a 6 mag min. for any mag fed gun I own. I acquire more as I find deals and what not.

5 is a good minimum for any pistol you ever plan to shoot competitively or use defensively. For a rifle you plan to 'use for SHTF' (quotes because I hope you never need it for that) you should have at least 5-6 mags, especially if they're 10 rounders. .308 is a better powered rifle than .223, so you could get away with having fewer mags and planning to reload, but you still don't want to short yourself too much. More importantly, have a means to carry those mags and a sling for your rifle.

I've got 7 30rd. AR mags loaded up for SHTF in the closet, varying ammo, all color coded so I know what's what. 2x loaded with Hornady TAP, 1x with Black Hills 77gr. SMK, 2x Winchester 62 gr. FMJ, and 2x coupled loaded with M855. The coupled pair sits on a shelf near the rifle, the rest are in an ammo can a few feet away, also near two labeled cans stocked full of 500rds. SS109, 1000rds. AE223, and a few misc. boxes of the specialty ammo above. I occasionally dip into the AE223/SS109, but it's never below 1000rds. But I always make a point to restock it when funds permit, and the 7 loaded mags never get touched.

I'm a little picky with my home-defense/SHTF stuff, but I'm sure plenty of members here would make me look poorly equipped. It's also a good idea to have other essentials stocked up, you could have weeks worth of ammo that won't do you any good if SHTF. Stick a few gallons of water, some MREs or canned foods, a reliable flashlight/batteries, and a change of clothes all in a safe area you could quickly grab and toss in your vehicle should you have to travel.

That's all stuff I need to do myself, but I've got a small place in the middle of a huge city at the moment, so I'm going to wait till I relocate and live alone to arrange my SHTF stock. If it happens before then I'll just go shopping. Cash or lead, Ralph's will always accept one of them.

Someone here mentioned a while back that you should budget at least 25% of the total price of the gun on magazines. Sounds like a pretty good place to start.

I bought 20 HK mags for my HK Rifles years ago and Have since purchased some replacement parts as the original ones Have deteriorated over the years they are steel after all and steel rusts when you accidentally leave it outside in the rain.

For the my Sig pistols I owned alot of standard cap magazines before I even came back to this communist state and YES I did come back before 1998 so I'm golden as far as the law on mags is concerned.

I would pickup replacement mags if I were someone with a Rifle or Pistol.

How do you remember your zero with all those bullet weights? I know my guns won't hit the same place with those different weights.

Wouldn't it be better to shoot the same bullets?
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

How many people ever need more than 2 mags? SHTF hasn't happened yet and even in New Orleans you could probably reload if you had 2.

                That said - I like 4 as a minimum

At distance yes. I have my rifle zeroed with 62gr. M855 at 200 yards, the Winchester 62gr. loads shoot very near zero, close enough to wave off the difference. The other loads are all within a few inches high or low, I didn't keep the targets so it's a little fuzzy but I think I determined they were all within 6" of zero. Since I don't intend to be shooting anything 200 yards away if/when SHTF, I'm comfortable with that. Even with a target 200 yards away, aiming at center mass, 6" high or low is still within a fairly lethal zone. To each his own, for me, if SHTF I'm going to hunker down and defend myself somewhere; not be out patrolling and shooting at people 400 yards away. From a defensive point of view, I want to know I can shoot through windshields, light body armor, have cheap loads for zombie dogs, decent loads for zombie men/invading armies, and a decent 600 yard load like the 77gr. SMK. (Plus it makes me feel tacti-cool).

And yeah Steve, we may never need them, I hope we don't as a matter of fact. But I have a fixed mag build at the moment, so sadly I can't use my 30s anyway, may as well keep them loaded for SHTF. If funds allow and I build a gripless rifle down the road, I'll probably unload half of them and use them for range practice.

I own probably LOTS of mags. Heck, I own mags for guns that I have SOLD over the years just because they were such great mags and I might buy another host again.

When I buy a new gun (with a detachable mag) I make sure that I also buy 5 mags with it. This allows me to get a good "feel" for the weapon when at the range and lets me continue shooting if some of those new untested mags crap out the first time I use them. I own no less than 4 "tested" and reliable masgs for each weapon.

                        Thats rather glib
Magazines are consumables they get dropped, they break they get lost. and as such need replacements
Then you have the specter of bans.
Satex may not recall the price of an AR-15, Glock or an M1A mag back in December '99 but those of us who do know how crazy a market can get when the word "ban" is thrown about. And I'll bet that most of us who were around back then wish we had bought more even at those prices.

I try to have at least 10 magazines for every firearm. (I'm lucky, I bought crates of mags back before the ban tho)

10 mags usually fills a belt or bandolier, but it all depends on how you intend to cary them.

Let's get back in touch with reality: this is not the world of "Red Dawn." Two mags per firearms is plenty. Now for your SHTF Saiga, 5 is more than you will ever need. Now if the S does HTF, the CHP will conficate all your guns anyway.

Unless you have more than 5 mags.
