    New toys!

Picked up a couple of new toys today, an S&W 629-4 and a Ruger Speed-Six. I'm not big on the 3" 629, but I was able to locate a new 4" barrel from S&W so it'll soon be wearing that. The Speed-Six is kinda neat. It's an old ABC (Alcohol Beverage Control) gun (see stamp on frame), is a .38, and although the hammer is bobbed, there is still the ability to shoot it single action (the top of the hammer is checkered for grip). It shows some wear (likely carried alot, shot a little), but it's in great shape and has a slick trigger.

You're right, that speed six is cool!
If it was a snake, it would have bit me.

        Great Speed Six!

Did it come that way from Ruger, or did someone do the hammer work afterwards? I've never seen one like that.

This is the third (!) 3" I've had. I've always wanted a 4", but could never find one so I bought the 3" with the intention of having the barrel swapped. But, I could never find a 4" barrel when I had the other two, so this time I went right to S&W. One of their Customer Service guys spent a good 20 minutes researching the barrel for me a finally came up with one that was correct for that gun (1994). Excellent service! I know some may cringe at changing the barrel, but I gotsta' have my 4". Of course, any four inchers (in the same excellent condition) for trade would be considered!

Very nice 629. I like the 3" but it would more of a 44 spl shooter. A friend of mine and I stopped by a shop today and he NEEDED the 29 3" unfluted they had. I like my 29 and 629 3"ers.
Did the Ruger come that way from the factory or was it custom job? Either way looks like a nice gun.

Now it really looks like you need to make room in your safe!!!!!
            PM me!

Again good for you on some nice finds.

Love that 3" SW. Pity that it has to be butchered.

                Don't ruin a nice 3" 629. They're in relatively short supply.

(I believe there are CA-approved 3" 629s today, in both fluted & unfluted cylinder configuration, called "Trail Boss" - although these are not large production runs.)

Finding 4" 629s is fairly easy.

You should think of your 3" 629 not as a 44Mag, but as a great 44Special and you will have a great, manageable shooter.

BTW 3" bbl guns should use ammo w/faster burning powders.

Aww man they should be perfectly docile with 240s on top of 24 grains of H110.

Was that 3" 29 at the Shooting Gallery? I was in there yesterday and they had one on consignment. Decent shape, but not as nice as yours! I'm not sure if the Ruger came that way from the factory, or ABC had them done. It looks like a factory job because the checkering on the top of the hammer looks the same as they factory checkering on a standard Ruger hammer spur. I have to admit it was an impulse buy. I've been looking for one in .357 for some time and this was the first one I've seen in any caliber. I made a package deal on it and the 629, so here it is. As neat as it is, I'm really not sure if I'll hang on to it.

Man I wish I could find one. This is my 3rd 3" 629 (Pre-lock, pre-MIM) in the past year and half. All have been reasonably priced and perfect shape. The last 629 4" I saw was at J&G in Roseville about six months ago and it sold just before I got there. It was excellent, but went for $850!

Indeed it is one in the same. Yes I like mine better but the guy I was with needed it especially after the original box, papers, and unopened cleaning tools came with it. I am sure I will probably have it offered to me in the next 6 months after the thrill is over. Not sure what I would need with 2 29 3" but ya never know..... Now about that needed room in your safe....

Don -- like that 629!! You make all the good finds. Wish I had a 4" to trade you --- would do so in a heartbeat. You've got to shoot .44mags out of that sucker and tell us what it feels like -- that is, if you can still type with both hands afterwards

                            cheers,
