SA v12 1911
I wanted to invent an engine that could run for ever. I could have developed a new train, had I stayed in the railway. It would have looked like the AK-47 though. MIKHAIL KALASHNIKOVTags: None -
V12
Q.How hard is it to get an SA v12 1911, is that custom?
A.Up until about 2005, you could buy one new from Springfield. Now you would either find one used or modify an existing pistol into a V12. A regular 1911 could be modified into a V12 by cutting the port slots into the slide and installing the correct ported bull barrel. (I don't remember if the barrel is ramped, so there could be extra work required to the frame as well). Any decent Gunsmith could make these modifications; should not need to have Springfield's Custom shop do the work.
Q. Whats the price range?
A. These come up on Calguns occasionally. Earlier this year, one in very nice condition had a list price of $1,000. The price could be lots less, depending on the seller and the condition. You might check Gunbroker and see if anyone is selling the topend only and swap it out.
These also came as V10 (shorter barrel) and as a long slide V16. Part of the reason for the porting is on allow these pistol to also shoot .45 Super ammunition (sort of +P+ version of 45 acp) - mainly the V12 and V16. Some of the V16 pistols are stamped ".45 SUPER" on the slide and come with an extra heavier recoil spring in the box (some have only extra spring and still shoot .45 super

Not sure why
I don't know why. You might search the 1911 forums and see if you get a better answer. Probably like everything else, might not have sold enough to keep on making them.
BTW: The early models had standard thumb safety and around 2003 the ambi safety become standard. (Should you find one, that will give you a better idea of the age). I also understand that the early ones had carbon steel barrels; the later models definately have stainless steel barrels.sigpic Same boy, better toysComment
