Dawson Precision makes good stuff. Be aware though, that it requires drilling and tapping of the dust cover and should ONLY be done by a highly skilled gunsmith. If it gets screwed up by a hack, your screwed and so is your gun.

Finding a good gunsmith doesn't necessarily mean looking near you. I have a gunsmith near me that I trust to fit parts and such, but I wouldn't use him for this. I send my 1911's to Dave Severns of Severns Customs in Nevada or Chuck Rogers of Rogers Precision in Arizona. It may be worth it to you to wait and save money and have some additional work done to justify the cost of shipping. Also be aware that all really good gunsmiths are extremely busy and back logged, so there will be a wait. It took 3 months to get my slide back from Severns Custom for new XS Big Dot Night Sights, fit and install a NM bushing, and flush cut and re-crown the barrel. But his work is awesome and worth the wait.
If you want additional info or pics, PM me. Glad to help.

When you factor cost of parts, labor, and time you're going to be out of a gun while it's installed - i'm not sure if it's really worth it.
Take the money and put it in a fund to buy a 1911 with a rail. Now during the 3 months or so you would be waiting while it's installed, save some more money. You'd be surprised at how fast you can come up with it.
Figure the part is $70 (plus shipping) alone, factor say at least another $100 for installation. If you use an out-of-area smith, you gotta factor shipping on that - which could run $40-$50? You're up in the $200 range already...Comment

I would recommend either the S&W 1911 w/rail or the Springfield Armory MC Operator.

if you just want a rail, why not get a drop in rail like the TRG tick rail?
i used a similar product for a jericho 941 and it worked great.Comment
