Does anybody know how much a gunsmith usually charge for replacing 1911 thumb safety?

Not sure what a smith charges but its easy to do yourself. Where are you located? I'm sure someone can help out. If your close to me, I will do it for you. -
look on youtube. theres maaaanyyyyy videos that show how to dissasemble 1911's. there is too many vid's or DOY articles out there. when I wanted to get a extended slide release the gun smith just did it for me at the gun shop. you can go there and have him swap it out for you to make sure it fits. it only takes a minute.Have an idea or invention? If we're talking an older production 1911 such as a USGI Colt, there is more to replacing the thumb safety than removing the old and putting in the new. The thumb safety at detent must lock both the sear and hammer. Tolerances in older guns usually require some hand fitting.
Newer 1911's made by CNC machining and MIM parts tend to have tight tolerances and parts are more interchangeble.Life Member NRA and 2A Foundation.

Just a bit of a guess, but if all goes well I'd say $25.00 plus the cost of the part.
Nearly any thumb safety will require fitting for safe function and it's not a great challenge, just have to be sure you don't get too agressive with the file. I usually remove the MSH so I can peek inside while I'm fitting. But there is a difference between fitting for safety and fitting to ensure smooth, crisp function. You want the thing to be smooth and snap on & off cleanly and positively. That may require a bit more than simply fitting for safety.GOA Member & SAF Life MemberComment

Many years ago, I had a low mount thumb safety installed on a para p14-45. Now that I shoot the Sig 1911 more, I am thinking of putting the original ambi back on the para and install the low mount thumb safety on the sig.
I had it done by a gunsmith in Torrance or Long beach, can't remember the name.Comment
