    AR-15 pistols

Not sure if i should post this in the handgun or centerfire section, but can someone please inform me as to the legality of AR-15 pistols in california? sometimes its hard to separate fact from fiction. I have a few questions.

    1. I have heard that it is illegal to have a pistol with a magazine not located in the pistol grip.
2.I have also heard that pistols can not have threaded barrels for a flash hider or muzzle break?
    3. Also if the AR pistol is legal, i understand that for a forward pistol grip you must first receive an AOW tax stamp from the ATF. Are AOW's legal in California?

Please forgive my ignorance. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Oh no! I guess mine is illegal

    Answers:

1.) Not if there is a mag lock on the pistol

    2.) Same answer as #1

3.) As far as I know an AOW is obtainable only if you have a Trust or have a Sheriff sign off on it. There is a thread that is like a million pages long that explains the ins and outs of setting up a trust and getting AOW Stamps and such.

Personally I do not see much need for a forward grip on most AR/AK Pistols.

you need to read the handgun flowchart, http://www.calguns.net/caawid/hgflowchart.pdf , to see how all the different federal and state laws interact related to the possession of a specific handgun. The flowchart covers the legality of the handgun as it sits there, but does not deal with purchase issues like the Roster.

depends on the configuration. Look at the handgun flowchart for more info.

yes, if properly registered as an AOW, a VFG'ed pistol is legal in CA, provided that it is not otherwise an AW.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

        1) The handgun must either not be semi-automatic or must not have detachable magazines to legally have this feature.

        2) The handgun must either not be semi-automatic or must not have detachable magazines to legally have threaded barrels.

        3) Look in Ke6guj's signature about how to obtain an AOW.

I am debating whether to start with an AR pistol or a .50 beowulf AR-15. The only problem with the beowulf is the super expensive ammo. But atleast with the beowulf i don't have to spend a couple months waiting for a AOW tax stamp before i can build it how i want. so many choices.

HAHA I like your style but i would be worried about the kick (similar to a 12 gauge) without the shoulder stock, even with a good muzzle break. Can you imagine the fireball that would come out of that sucker. I have seen an AR-15 socom .458 pistol at ar15.com tho. Looked pretty cool. But I think if i was going to do a big cal AR pistol i would have to go with a 10-11.5" barrel and i would prefer a 7 1/2".
