Hard to insert/remove mag on fully loaded XD

I recently bought a Springfield XD in .40 S&W. It's the first handgun I've ever owned.

When I load the magazine, chamber a round, then remove the magazine to replace that round that was chambered (thereby making total capacity 11 rounds instead of 10), the magazine is unbelievably hard to insert! If I do manage to shove the magazine in, it's utterly impossible to remove, I have to cycle the gun manually to eject one round before it'll come out.

Is this normal? Will it go away as I "break in" the gun? Please help me.

A friend of mine had the same problem with his XD 40 but it loosened up with time and loading and unloading the magazines. In fact when he first got his XD 40 it was nearly impossible to fully load the magazines!

A lot of guns will do this. It's not even limited to handguns; a lot of free-state AR15 owners download their mags to 28 rounds so they don't have this problem. Usually it's because of a tight magazine spring, which will break in over time and get easier to work with.

I had this issue with new magazines in a different gun. I left each new magazine fully loaded in the gun for a week and the problem went away.

It's normal and yes it gets somewhat better over time. If you have trouble dropping a fully loaded mag, apply pressure upwards on the base pad as you press the mag release, makes it a bit easier.

Too many rounds in the mag.
Download the mag a round or two.
With the mag fully loaded, you should be able to press down on the top round in a the mag and get between .375-.500 travel for the mag to feed properly.

Most of my guns do this.

It's just the way they designed it. If they had given just a little more clearance for the follower length or compressed spring within the mag body you wouldn't have that problem. If your willing to experiment you could figure out what is causing the follower to bottom out and shorten it. It is most likely the follower itself, but it could be the mag spring just not having enough room when fully compressed. Be sure you don't make it into a high cap by accident. Hopefully it won't screw up your reliability.....you just never know.

Huh?? Load her till she's bulging. There's no feed issues involved with what you write of.

I have an XD40. To load a Magazine into it with the slide close you have to make sure you only have 9 rounds in the Magazine. If you want to load a Magazine with 10 rounds then the slide needs to be locked open first.

Carry and extra mag and don't worry about the +1 IMO

This is common with many different mags and guns.

                            Cineski, Stealth gets it.
Tactical reloads can just about be impossible (with my guns, anyway) with mags loaded "till she's bulging".
Same with my AR, for the mag to load quickly and feed properly, I can only load 28 rounds into a 30 round magazine, oops, I mean 8 rounds into a 10 round magazine

10rd mags often have this problem for many different firearms and manufacturers.

                              Load 9.
