I am moving to cali from virginia and have several handguns. does anyone know where i can get a list of legal guns and or how to tell. for handguns and shotguns. thank you.

Anygun you have should be ok as long as they are not classified as assault weapon(threaded barrel, and some other features).
For shotguns, it should not be on the list or not have some features

Ignore the Kasler v Locyer on page 55 of the book. It's been overturned. -
Most handguns can be brough into California legally when you establish residence here. If you acquired them legally as a resident of another state and then move here, you're ok. The forms are downloadable from the Ca. Dept. of Justice, Bureau of Firearms and involves a $19 fee. A common exception is The Judge, it's considered a short-barrel shotgun. There are links at the top of this page to flowcharts that will help you sort out what you've got.sigpicComment

You might check the roster to find out what guns you cannot buy here and buy what you want before moving.
Something as simple as a Ruger LCP or a Keltec PF9 are not on the roster. I'd get one of each before moving here.
