1911 customization

I'm thinking about getting a 1911 from Rock River Arms, and I'm wondering whats involved in switching out the grip (I don't know what their called, the plates on the side of the grip) Are most 1911 grips inter-compatible between brands and models?

Yes, there are many aftermarket grip panels that will fit on a 1911 with a full size frame. You will have a ton of choices.

You do know that Rock River doesn't have any approved models in California don't you? You won't be able to buy a new one or one from out of state. If you can find one for sale in the state, grab it!


All 1911 grips fit all 1911's. You do have to have some relief on one grip if you have a lever type ambi-safety.

well whatever you get, if the frame is a 1911 then you can buy just about every other part in the aftermarket and make a frankengun if you wanted to.

I'm partial to matte Colt 1991 models with the black rubber grips. I found one a year ago for $570 in like new condition( I'm not sure if it was fired or not..not more than a few shots anyways). You are money ahead to get major brands IMO.

The Rock Island 1911s are very basic and inexpensive, but they are well made, and usually decently fitted (all the ones I've handled). No, they're not in any way related to Rock River Arms. They're made by Armscor I believe, same company that makes Charles Daly firearms.

As to the grips, yes, any "Government" frame 1911 grips should fit that RIA 1911, so as others stated you have tons of choices.

I'm trying to get one really fast so I can qualify for a competition. Needs to be service spec which, I think means it just needs to be the 5'' barrel.

"Service spec" could mean all sorts of things, most likely it refers to magazine capacity, presence of iron sights and NO optics/lasers, barrel length may be a factor. In most cases any stock 1911 would be good to go for "service spec" depending on what you're shooting. IDPA?

It's for the national match at Pendleton starting April 28th. I've never shot competition before but I have someone willing to show me the ropes and help me out if I can achieve temporary qualification before then. I've always wanted to get into shooting competitions, and this guy has been doing em for 37 years (so hopefully I can find an NRA sanctioned high power match to participate in before the 28th.

If you're going to a bullseye match, you'd be better off borrowing from any other competitor than buying a Rock Island product. You'll be lucky to hit the target at 50 yards with it, just my humble opinion.

Very likely to be a waste of money. Beg and borrow, you will be way better off. If you can find a Les Baer, they are just about the same as Rock River Arms, and they have several match-quality guns certified for California, including the Hardball, which should be EXACTLY what you need. I bet you can find one for sale on Gunsamerica.com or gunbroker.com.

Possibly the Premier II may be legal as well, but maybe not, not sure about what rules you will be under.

By the way, I have a Premier II, as well as a Rock River Hardball, and a Rock River Ltd Match. The brands are very very close in quality. Got the RRAs back when we could still.

It's a Rock Island 1911 you are buying. The RRA 1911s cost around $2K.

1911 grips are almost the same. Thin and regular are the two major different types. The bushings and screws are different for each grip type. Some people like the thin grips. Your gun will come with regular grips.
