    Purchase "LE" ammunition?

    Hi,

Is it illegal in California to purchase "LE" ammo if I'm not a police officer?

    Item in question: http://www.policehq.com/Products/FC-9HST

I can't seem to find that ammo anywhere except "LE" versions...

    Indeed.

The non-LE versions I could find are 20 rounds/box @ ~$20/box, while the LE versions are usually 50 rounds/box @ ~$25-30/box (and these are usually the ones all over GunBroker).

Looks like I found the answer to my question...

Short answer: it seems to be legal.

Most ammunition marked "Law Enforcement" are completely legal for ownership by ordinary citizens. As long as it isn't some kind of incendiary or explosive round, or some other type specifically controlled by law ... you should be good to go.

No incendiaries, no explosive rounds, no AP Handgun ammo. That's pretty much it. Shotguns have a couple other types of ammo restrictions. "Law Enforcement" marked packaging is just packaging... generally speaking.

some value pack ammo will read "Not for Law enforcement use" and then there are LEO ammo marked "LEO use only". they are just trying to say dont use range ammo on duty. dont use duty ammo at the range.
Although, of course i disagree with the last part.

"LE" ammunition is just a marketing gimmick used by the manufacturer. It's designed specifically for LE use. Some MFGs will say "won't sell it to civvies" but a dealer of theirs will gladly do so. There's nothing that says you can't buy it.

as long as you are not in New Jersey, you are good.

God help you if you get popped with a single round of LE HP ammo in Jersey.

Bought a box of 50 at a local gun show, expensive! I will never shoot it unless I have to.

ok here is the skinny on l.e ammo. l.e agencies have approved ammo that they use for most dept's. i.e load, expansion capability and reliability. thats it. most use winchester ranger for handgun an i don't remember what we used in rifles.

I order all of my "LE" ammo from them, including 9mm HST. Never had any problems getting ammo shipped to the LA area from them.

LE only marked ammo and magazines/guns are just to make police officers feel special, but legal to own as a civilian.
