    Gun's serial number on internet

So I'm thinking about purchasing a firearm online but its serial number is clearly visible in the pictures that are advertised. Should I expect any problems with purchasing this firearm? Thanks.

Unless somebody wants to go through the time and duplicate the serial number on a gun they were planning to use on a crime then NO I dont see a problem.

      Yup.

Only other potential issue is if someone called it in and reported it stolen, but if the seller has a legitimate receipt (hopefully dated prior to when the potential thief claims he lost it), it'll be resolved quickly.

I disagree. You want to protect the privacy of the serial number of your firearm on the Internet to the world, have at it. Nothing wrong with that; their are some shenanigans doing this protects you from. Same as blurring your license plate of your car. It's up to you.

I think people that live in other states and have guns that they don't need to register have a valid point when they block out their serial #'s. Here in CA, they know exactly who has what number and I don't see any problem in showing it on the web. What could possibly happen?

There really isn't a convincing practical reason to hide the serial numbers, but at the same time, there is no reason to show it off either, unless it is a real vintage gun.

Longarms aren't registered in CA, only handguns...but you're right, I don't see an issue with displaying serials. A criminal is going to grind off his serials if anything, why would he bother replacing them with another number? LE can only trace a gun to the last legal transfer. In the case of a crime gun, it has most likely changed hands illegally so many times since, that the last legal transfer will be of little help.

The advantage of a serial number is the potential buyer in many cases can look up the make, model and range of numbers to clarify
when it was made. Also, there are free sites you can go to and see if this weapon had been reported stolen. I don't sell guns, I buy.
When I post pictures of my guns, I don't feel the need to show the serial number.

The serial number of a long gun is not listed on the DROS.

Every state has the same 4473 requirements.
