Need a bit more info too help you out.. When was the last time fired? If a long time have you really cleaned it since?..Originally posted by FastFingerWe are a dynamic community that reflects society at large. If there is a trait that distinguishes us it is that we're protectors of the the infirm, the elderly, and defenseless women (often sorority sisters who like beer & pillow fights). That means that at some point we may be called on to do battle with zombies. That is nothing to be ashamed of. . -

Does it require the mag installed in the gun? My buddy has an old colt and it will not fire without the mag installed?? It was made around 1940NRA Life MemberComment

is there any kind of dent in the primer?, if a small one, maybe the firing pin has worn enough, not to make full contact. remove the firing pin, and compare with another. or possibly, the firing pin, canal?(can't think of the right term) is dirty, you could use a q-tip , (after the pin is removed) to clean the "canal", or use a pressurized solvent. That may be a CG first!

Which is from 1940? The 1911 or the ammo. The ammo could be defective of improperly stored -- especially if oil has gotten to it. Light oils can get past the primer and ruin the priming compound.
The 1911 has an inertial firing pin. It is not driven into the primer by the hammer -- the hammer launches the pin forward, and the pin's momentum carries the pin forward to strike the primer. If old sticky lube is in the firing pin passage -- or it is over oiled, the firing pin cannot strike with full force.
On rare occasions, firing pins break. And, if the firing pin spring is worn and mis-shaped, it can interfere with proper firing pin function.
Removal, inspection and cleaning of the firing pin is called for. It can be removed without field stripping. Wear safety glasses. Start with an unloaded 1911 with the slide locked back. Depress the firing pin with any small diameter tool that will depress the firing pin and allow you to slide down and out the firing pin retainer at the rear of the slide -- watch the pin, it may come flying out -- get a finger over it just before the retainer releases it.Life Member NRA and 2A Foundation.

1940????? Its trying to tell you not to shoot it. I wouldnt shoot that gun if I were you. one squib round, and it'll crack on you.Don't take refuge in the false security of consensus.
