              I think they said the guy that designed liked to have his thumb on the top of the gun when holding it or something....It straight up looks dumb

                Repositioned (forward) rear sight and sloped rear of slide in order to facilitate thumb cocking when the pistol is carried hammer down;

                  I bought a plain blued steel (used) in 1980 for about $200.00. Very reliable and I still have it. It's held up well although not shot much. Last year I bough a MKVI new in box from Contra Costa Arms in Walnut Creek - had the instruction book, extra sight blades, etc. $850.00. That's pretty much in line with other NIB I've seen for the MKVI, but I've seen blued MKIs for about $425.00 - $500.00.

                  The flat slide is supposedly to make thumb cocking easier - they don't have a grip safety. But nor do they have any firing pin block so I don't know about the wisdom of carrying the hammer down on a live round. I always did cocked & locked.

                  I've had other small 1911s and I suppose the Paras, Kimbers, etc are just as well made or better. I've just always had one & liked them.

                    Apparently the original designer liked to carry hammer down.

                    So moving the rear sight forward allowed the thumb to cock the hammer when the pistol was drawn.

                    The new combat masters still have the rear sight forward but not that much.

                      I have a few Detonics Combatmasters, from Mark I to Mark IV, as well as a Scoremaster and a very rare Janus Scoremaster. I don't own anything from the latest incantation of Detonics (but will, and hope to do so soon).

                      Here is something a little special as far as Combatmasters go, that you won't see every day. My Mark III Hard Chrome with factory bobbed hammer. It's desgined to be carried cocked & locked:

                        CALI-gula, Thats a pretty slick mkIII. I also am a proud Detonics owner and haven't dove in to the current production pistols only because they just don't seem to have the same character as the old Washington production guns. With that said I have no doubt that I will "need" one someday. I would love to get a Streetmaster but would have to move out of the state to do it.

                          I have a collection of Washington made guns as well as 2 of the new 9 11 01 pistols. I feel that the new ones are just as good as the originals

                            I snagged a Detonics USA CombatMaster recenty, and picked it up from City Arms yesterday. Before putting some obligatory rounds down her bore, I took some snapshots:
