    H&K advice?

I just picked up my first handgun, an old sig 226 from the eighties, lightly used. Im looking to pick up another pistol for the collection though and always had an interest in H&K's when I was younger. I had the chance to shoot a full size usp a while back and loved the feel and features but did find it to be one really big gun.

Its been a while since I've looked at their products, does anyone recommend and H&K pistol that is below 1,000 preferably and at the same time is in .45/9? I realize their pistols tend to be expensive and people keep throwing me recommendations of p2000's and other pistols like that.

I have an HK USP 40 Compact with factory Tritium Sights and love it. I paid $890 for it 9 years ago.

Unfortunately you won't find a USP that is interchangeable between 9 and 45. They use different frames.

Oh I dont mean interchangeable, I just mean .45 or 9mm only. I never was a big fan of .40 myself. In any case I should have said the compact usp in .40 was one I shot and wasnt a fan of, still quite bulky in my opinion although it was damn accurate as hell.

I see alot of MSRP for this brand at 1000 to 1100 so I guess I'd have to put the budget just over the 1,000 limit but I dont want to spend to much here.

Oops. If you're willing to buy used, there are many for $700-$800 in the classifieds.

Although I cannot shoot USPs very well, I can appreciate how overbuilt they tend to be. Runs like a Timex, only cooler.

Used are usually just as good.

The USP 9 and 40 are practically the same gun in terms of size. The USP 45 is just a tiny bit bigger.

The HK 45 is smaller but unfortunately not on the CA roster.

If you aren't in California, P30 and/or HK45 would be the way to go.

The USP and P226 are a bit big for my hands, which is why I found the P2000 to be a joy to shoot. The ambi slide release and slimmer grips makes it easier to operate without changing your grip when reloading and releasing the slide.

Street price for a new P2000 I believe is around $869. I believe the USP is similar. This is normal pricing at a decent gun shop.

Great deals can be found on used guns with very low round count. I have seen P2000's for $700. Keep your eyes open here in the sale forum. Plus, you don't pay sales tax when buying used.

I don't like the ergonomics of H&K pistols, but the company does know how to make a reliable gun. If you like shooting them, then by all means, buy one. Anything with less than 2K rounds through it (priced accordingly) would be OK.

All USPs feature a fiber-reinforced polymer frame stiffened by stainless steel inserts at areas subject to stress and friction. HK pioneered this use of polymer materials

Would highly recommend the usp compact 45 - new to firearms and am completely enjoying this gun. I prefer the P2000 grips, but chose the uspc because of the external safety/decocker lever. Total out the door (tax and dros) was ~1100 from a local gun shop.

You can't go wrong with either!

Only small hitch - factory 45 ammo is scarce and pricey unless you do reloads.
