    Polishing Slides

    Question I want to give it a try and polish a stainless slide i have sitting here what is the best way to get that mirror finish

        Depends. Are you wanting to polish the whole thing or just the side like this....



        Whole slide needs a bench grinder and the side only need a sheet of glass and various types sand paper.

          I have always worked by hand, using Mother's Mag and Chrome Polish and a soft clean rag. A clean cotton diaper will work very nicely. I've done several stainless guns this way.

          I do not recommend using a bench grinder with a buffing wheel on your first few attempts. Very easy to overdo it and take some of the rollmarks off.... which would be particularly bad if one of those marks happened to be the serial number.

              Wet/dry sand paper on a flat surface, glass preferably. Start with 600 and move up to 1500. When that's done it will be close to a mirror so then hit it with the buffer. If you don't use paper first and try to get the mirror finish with just buffing wheels on the bench grinder by leaning really hard on it you'll round off all the sharp edges and clean lines.
