Hey I just picked up a brand new Rock Island Armory 1911 (great gun for price) and I realized that the rounds wobble (ever so slightly but still) when they are chambered in the barrel (I did this with the barrel removed). Of course when you fire them they expand to the right size and everything, as confirmed with my spent cartridges (no wobble at all). Is this normal? I am guessing it is to assist with better feeding but I was also concerned with the blowback gases that may erupt from the sides to the rear of the cartridge. Just wondering if this is normal for kimbers and springfields as well. Sorry for the newbistry. My AK, shotgun, 22 rifle do not do this...maybe just handguns? Any feedback is great, thanks!

Brand New 1911 Headspace Issue

Unlike .22lr, a .45 acp round headspaces on the case mouth as opposed to the rim of the cartridge. Are you shooting factory ammo or reloads? The overall length may be a tad too long.Originally posted by G. Michael HopfHard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times. -
This is normal and is not a headspace issue.
Yes, they wobble in the chamber to allow smooth functioning. The use of brass is to expand to the chamber diameter and seal the breech. Brass has the ability to expand and release after chamber pressure falls to normal. Steel and aluminum cases cannot do it as well a brass.Life Member NRA and 2A Foundation.
