    Question Bout' Kimbers

Sooo.... I was in a local gunsmithing shop in Ventura a few days back and i noticed a guy in there getting his Kimber worked on, I asked him what was wrong with it and he said it was brand new and needed to be tuned up!!!??? I have shot quite a few Kimbers and never noticed anything that would indicate a new one was not up to par. Then the guy behind the counter was trying to tell him that his Brand new Ruger SR556 needed to be "tuned" as well, he said it needed a "stronger" firing pin, new bolt hardware, and "fine tuning". I think the guy was tryin to come up on some cash.... Anyways has anyone had any problems with new Kimbers? ever needed to "tune em up" when there brand spankin new??

Yes, I've had two of my three which needed additional work.
-TLE II: This one had the slide prematurely locking back. A new slidestop solved that problem.
-SIS Custom: This gun went full auto on the 2nd or 3rd mag of ammo, new out of the box. Kimber replaced the sear while refitting the trigger components.
    -Warrior: no problems.

I have a Custom II that had a hammer follow problem. I fixed it myself, with a little tweek of the spring. Now it's just fine. No other problems to speak of.

I have a custom II eclipse with about 6,000 rounds through it maybe a thou more or less.

Only two rounds did not fire.. it was the ammo. I have shot about 5 kinds of factory ammo and mostly my own reloads.. 200 lead SWC and 230 cast lead round nose and FMJ reloads. The gun never screws up. I use Wilson and CM mags and even a couple of Colt mags. It is as tight and as accurate as the day I got it.

No issues at all with a purchased new Eclipse Custom II or a used Ultra Carry II - both tight, accurate, great ergonomics and looks.

All three of my Kimbers have at least 500rds through them and no problems.

I think your gunsmith is just looking for money.

Kimbers may need to be tuned out of the box, but it doesn't require a trip to the smith. I've noticed some of the new Kimbers I've seen come with insufficient extractor tension, some of mine included. Also the overtravel screw backed out once. All these fixes don't need to be sent to the smith for a super-duper-reliability throat and polish job.

                            ^this

Custom II about 4K rounds through her, no issues w/ the gun, some ammo related hiccups, but the gun itself is stellar.

This "tune up", IMHO, can be done by cycling the action a few hundred times after its first cleaning & BEFORE its first range trip. I also cycled snap caps through mine about a hundred times via dry fire and extractor function check. Lastly, w/ empty mags I function checked the slide stop as well.

                            No problems since.

                              TLE/II

Right out of the box it would jam 2-3 times on every mag. I tried in it. I tried the mags. it came with, Wilson and McCorrmick's. I sent it back to the factory and they claimed that it just needed a good cleaning and test fired it extensively. The person I spoke to claimed they fired eight full mags. through it and it ran just fine. I left it with a local gun smith who insisted that Kimber should make it right because it was still under waranty. The smith said he had a friend at Kimber and he would make sure it was taken care of correctly.....

To make a long story short they ended up replacing the barrel the second time around because the chamber was out of spec.

The gun shoots fine now but I'll never buy another Kimber.
