9mm 115gr vs 124gr

I have only used 115gr until this point. Just bought 1000 rounds of 124gr. I mostly use these in tactical training classes.

Is there much difference in the performance or accuracy of one vs the other? I did read that 124gr is better if you are shooting steel reactive targets. What about other factors such as range and accuracy?

Some say the 115 gr load feels more "snappy." But I think it's all going to depend on the amount of powder used, what velocity you're trying to achieve, and the specific gun you're using. YMMV.

I dunno, all I know is Massad Ayoob loves the 115 gr Cor-bon JHP as a 9mm "manstopper"

it really does depend on how you decide to load them

while the 115gr is pretty much the American standard, the 124gr was the original design weight

the mist accurate factory load i've ever shot was the 147gr subsonic, while the best combination of speed, accuracy and controlability in a handload has been the 135gr plated

If i were carring it for ccw I would probably go 115gr because for personal protection i dont see much chance you are going to use it on barriers. People here on this side of the states usually light clothing. So I would go 115gr.

I like 147 for 9mm for an SD round. Although I shoot 115 and 124 at the range. I prefer the 124 because it feels snappier to me than 115 for some reason. 124 is the world standard for 9mm ammo, as the Nato round is 124 grain moving at 1250 fps IIRC.

You prefer that it feels snappier? I just bought some 147 gr Speer Gold Dots but I haven't had a chance to get to use them yet. I don't want to waste them shooting holes in paper at the range. I want to be able to take it to the desert and shoot some kind of reactive targets to compare against 115 FMJ...

In normal target loads, I don't feel much difference between 115gr and 124gr rounds. But I noticed that shooting 147gr rounds are less snappy than those.

I just got an email from CTD saying they have on sale right now 115 gr Speer Lawman FMJ for $11.19 a box. Price isn't too bad and Speer is a good brand, but does anyone have any experience with these?

Maybe snappier was the wrong term. 9mm is a generally mild round to shoot. 124 has a bit more push than 115. Maybe it's not snappier, but it does seem to have a bit more perceived recoil. When 9mm is concerned, I like a bit of push at the range as it ups the fun factor just enough to be more fun. 147 feels more like a toned down 45 to me, so my favorite is 147, and I use 147 for SD as it penetrates more and allows for faster follow up shots. 9mm is just a fun round to shoot, and it's cheaper than most. If I wanted no recoil, I'd shoot .22 more, but .22 is boring compared to the recoil 9, and 9 is just enough to not fatigue my hand after 200 rounds.

I've used it and think it is a good value. It has been reliable and doesn't seem to be any dirtier than more expensive ammo. I use it for plinking or action pistol type shooting so I can't comment on bench rest accuracy. I'm a big fan of Speer and have been happily using all of their 115 gr 9mm range ammo - Blazer Alum, Blazer Brass and Lawman - for many years. $11.19 is a pretty good price these days and I'm tempted to stock up. Thanks for the heads up.

Me-

- I use 115 grain FMJs for training and 124 grain JHPs for HD/SD.

- I should probably go to 115 JHP for consistantcy.

- In all reality, I wouldnt be able to tell the difference when shooting the 115 or 124.
