    M&P 45 chop

Since I can't buy a brand new M&P 45 compact here in California, I was considering buying a full size M&P 45, which as you all know is legal for purchase, and then chopping the grip (similar to how Dan Burwell did his chopper M&P's) to use the compact mags instead. My question is, doing such a mod wouldn't make the gun illegal in any way, right?

Would there also be any problems in buying the 45 compact mags and then having them shipped to California? They're 8 round mags, so they don't break the hi-cap ban, but I just want to be sure.

That mod is not illegal and getting those magazines in CA is not illegal. Let's see it after you're done.

Sweet! Now I just gotta get the right tools, then work up the balls to actually hack into a brand new gun.

There are shops that do this. There was a thread where a guy shortened his glocks and it looked good. I tried searching for the last 30 minutes to no avail, although the thread was probably in the last week. help anyone?

Sounds like a good plan to me. A lot of people have done the same thing with Glocks, but I'm not sure if you're able to the same with the M&P's as I'm not really familiar with them. Would the removable grip panels be an issue or do you just trim those along with the grip? How/where do they attach to the gun?

I don't think Bowie is offering the chop service on M&P's right now, although I am fairly sure Dan Burwell does. I'll have to ask him to see what kind of prices are involved.

The removable backstrap would just be trimmed down at the bottom along with the grip frame itself. The backstrap is held in place by a small tool, the bottom of which is that little nub that sticks out the bottom of the gun, and sits right behind the magazine when the magazine is inserted. I've been reading that some people had to be a little creative about getting that tool to stay in place once the gun is chopped, as it's not held in by anything other than friction (from my understanding). If you look at Bowie's chopped M&P, it looks like he just ditched it altogether and elected to have the grip permanently attached to the frame.

I would expect other M&P45 variants to be Rostered, now that several Ruger SR9, Sig P250, and FMK pistols have been Rostered. I believe S&W can do a 'flag' loaded chamber indicator.

I really like the Bowie M&P in OD green. Doubling the price of a M&P kinda takes all the warm and fuzzy great deal on a great gun out of it!
