Taurus Revolver

This would be my first revolver/handgun and was wondering what you guys think. I locally couldn't find any Smiths I wanted for brand new and found quite a few people recommending the Taurus line for a budget but still getting the job done.

(I'm just wishing these 2 models were 6 shot!).

Anyone have any luck or know anything about these 2 models? Experiences?

I have a Taurus 589, which is similar to those. It's a good gun, pretty accurate (well, a trigger job didn't hurt), and very reliable. It's my backpacking revolver, and it ended up in the mud a few times, shame to say. Works fine.

Another Taurus you might want to consider is Tracker 627. 7-shot .357 mag, it's built heavier than the 589, and it just feels good in the hand. Well, in my hand, anyway.

Oh, and model 65 IS a 6-shot.

Your right! It is a 6 shot, I meant the other model! I prefer black or blued myself but I dont mind the stainless finish!

I'm well aware that the quality isn't up to par with smith but I've heard for the price its almost ridiculous how good of a deal these revolvers are. I wasn't wanting to go into a bigger/heavier frame, its heavy enough already for that model which I only got to pick up for a moment. Needles to say 65 just looks awesome in the blued finish.

Is Taurus also related to Rossi firearms? Someone kept saying that I should stay away from Taurus but I've also heard their quality in the last 10 years or so has greatly improved from where they used to be.

im not trying to knock down on taurus, but theres already some one on this forum that had to send in the gun for repairs, and it was still new. there were also many others that mad similar problems, if you get it make sure your ready for a possible 1-2 month wait period if you have to send it in for repairs. It sucks because taurus makes nice looking guns, just wish they had better quality, guess you get what you pay for.

Taurus is hit and miss. The older Taurus revolvers seemed to be made better than the newer ones from what I have read online. I am taking the opinion of people who bought Taurus revolvers not personal experience. There was a time when I first got into firearms that I wanted a Taurus. It was cheap and there were some good reviews. There are more bad things than good things about the Taurus so I decided to pass. I like revolvers and like shooting them so i don't want something that is going to break on me. I saved up some loot for a GP100 that I found for $400. Now I have a colt. Basically your mileage may vary for the revolver but I rather skip the Taurus and spend the extra $100 or so on a Ruger or S&W. Heck there was a colt trooper for sale for $450. That's a deal!

Yea I was looking at one of these in blued as well.

But it is roughly 100-200 more, needless to say it sounds like quality has gone down hill over the years for the company?

since its your FIRST handgun , I would highly recommend save up another $200 or so and buy yourself a gun from a company that is know for quality like Colt, S&W, or ruger. I know theres other out there but im just trying to get my point across. If you get a lemon, which some of taurus's are, you might be discouraged to get anything else. on the flipside, there are many people that have a taurus with no problems, you should do some investigating and try and find out if there are certain cereal numbers thats have the defects. I am about to get a vlock 30sf , did some reaserch and found out some of them have extractor problems (FTE) and people have actually narrowed them down to certain cereal numbers on which have the defective extractors.

Tracker 627 is lot of fun...one of my favor 357.

I bought a Tracker 627. Out of the box it had severe timing issues and took two trips back for repair. It was reported to me by the shop owner where I bought the gun that two other Trackers from his store had similar issues. When he raised that issue with Taurus at the SHOT show in Vegas, he was given a less than satisfactory answer. He stopped carrying the Taurus line and I support him in that decision.

The trigger reset on the Tracker could also cause a lockup scenario. You really have to allow that trigger to come fully forward, almost to the point of letting your finger off the trigger. We've got a Smith & Wesson 686 and the trigger reset is far better.

Save up your money and go for a Ruger. Smith & Wesson will be more expensive than the Ruger. As a first handgun, the Taurus is a cheap buy in to the game, but the odds of winning are not that good. The odds of getting a lemon from Taurus are much higher than Ruger & Smith.

Yea I took a second look at the GP101 blued series. What you guys think of those rugers? And how much do they retail? The msrp had me a bit worried with it saying 600 and above.

That would be me. Part of the rear sight fell off a brand new Tracker after shooting .357 mag for the first time. That being said, they replaced it (for free, of course, it has a lifetime warranty), and I haven't had any problems with the revolver ever since. Now, 2 years and about 1500 rounds later, the internals still look almost new. Externally, well, those ports aren't easy to clean...

Their metallurgy wasn't as good as S&W's in the past, but I think that's just that - in the past. We'll see in the next xx,000 rounds.

Yes, Taurus is related to Rossi. They're owned by the same company, both are in Brazil. The same company happens to own S&W, as well, I believe.

Good revolver, built like a tank, crappy trigger. So, it's a Ruger Make sure to try the trigger before you buy it.
