If a 9mm Glock is your choice and target shooting, plinking and home defense are your uses without carry being in the mix then I suggest the model 34. The 34 is the longslide competition model which gives you a longer sight radius and some bells and whistles the other models don't give you and the price isn't much if any higher than the others.

I own a couple of 1911's, full size and Commander. I also have a Glock 17. Whatever you decide to buy, you mihgt also think about getting a .22 conversion kit for it.

Advantage Arms seems to make excellent kits for both guns. I'm waiting for a 1911 conversion to arrive. The money you save by shooting 22's will offset the cost of the unit after a year or two (depends how much you shoot), and you can develop excellent shooting skills along the way.

I like my Marvel conversion so much, I finally built a dedicated frame for it. It's my favorite gun now.

Both types of guns have plusses and minuses. I prefer a 1911 over a Glock for the trigger control. I own both a Glock 21 and three 1911 type pistols. For simplicity, the Glock is superior, for accuracy the 1911 beats it hands down. Glock pistols are thicker and more difficult to conceal.

If you are going to train and practice, I recommend the 1911, if you are just an occasional shooter, go with the Glock.
