Nice/Cheap soft handgun cases?

I am looking for a soft handgun case and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations.

I am choosing to opt for soft, rather than hard as the case itself will be placed into another bag (such as a range bag). Soft seems as it would take up less room and be lighter.

Also, of course, it would need to be lockable. If it comes with a locking mechanism, that is great - but I think double zippers would be fine, as I could use a separate lock to lock them together and still be within the law when transporting, right?

As for size, just big enough to hold a full sized handgun would be enough. The less bulky the better.

The cheaper the better, as long as it meets all the above requirements.

I use the eagle industries cases they work great and hold 4 to 5 mags depending on size www.eagleindustries.com there about $20.00/$25.00 last time i checked

I like the Ace Case bags for semi-autos - http://www.acecase.com/.

You can get them at most gun shows for the same price as the web. The quality's good, as is the selection.

The ones I get have an extra zippered pouch on the side and mag holder pockets inside (http://www.acecase.com/Rec-Bag-Nylon-p-16376.html), and are what I store all my semis in inside the safe, along with their mags and any accessories, like mag loaders.

This way, I can just grab a case or 3 and throw them into my range bag, knowing that everything I need is in there.

I have a few I keep as grab-n-go bags, as well, with loaded mags, a PocKit portable cleaning rod, a flashlight, a paddle holster, etc, all stuffed in the side pocket. Makes for a nice, compact package with everything you need.

For revolvers, my favorites are Boyt zipper bags, but they're a bit more expensive.

Kolpins used to be very nice and durable, but the new ones are made in China and one of those has already pulled apart at the seam a little. The one I bought in 1994 with an American flag logo on the tag is still fine. It's one of those locking zippers with the gun fur lining.

I always have nightmares about the wrong cop deciding that the lockable bags (zipper loops with a lock or whatever) are not 'secure'. Anyways, the soft bags are the way to go because they take less space than a hardcase.

It has handles and 2 zipper rings. I only use for transport to the range. Fits my 5" 1911.

Cheapest is probably Ace. The eagle cases look really nice. If you take a lot of the same pistols out often, you might find that a dedicated hard case is actually more efficient. The more individual soft cases you use, the more excess padding you are lugging around.

If you are using one big container to carry your individual pistol rugs, it is the only bag that needs to be lockable.

When carrying multiple pistols, the weight can add up very quickly, and soft bags (to carry all your gear) usually don't handle this very well, another reason to consider a hard case.

If you still want individual rugs for each pistol, consider an inexpensive toolbox as you large container to throw them all into. Easier to carry, innocuous appearance (except for thieves who love tools), and usually has provisions for a padlock.

This is what I do. I have an old Zero aluminum briefcase that I throw the soft cases into, and it'll hold 4 various size handguns like this, no problem. It's got a combo lock that locks everything up at once. I can cram stuff into it if I need to because the soft cases protect the guns and mags (they also protect them when they're crammed into the safe).

I have another old Eagle Creek soft briefcase that's my range bag; holds ammo, eyes and ears, range rod, pens, ruler, stick-on targets, whatever. This doesn't get locked because there's no need to.

When it's time to hit the range, I throw the guns in soft cases with all their accessories in the Zero and spin the dials, throw the ammo I need in the Eagle Creek (everything else lives there permanently), and I'm ready to go. Simple and reliable, and I always have what I need unless I grab the wrong ammo...

Handgun in a softcase like this one:

The case is locked with the unloaded handgun inside, sitting on the floor of the car, or anywhere else concealed with a loaded magazine in the pant pocket or somewhere else in the car within reach.


If the answer is yes, it would be legal, is this at anytime? Or only when going to the range, gunsmith, etc?
