Well guys I am here to deliver a P22CA range report.
First some info on the gun:
Walther 3.4" P22CA AK (2009) date code. Purchased by me via PPT, only 50 rounds though it when I got it. With one "B" marked magazine.
Before I shot it I reviewed the "P22 Bible" and did some reading. I took it completely apart and cleaned everything out with CLP, an air compressor, and then coated all moving parts in Rem Oil Dry Lube Teflon. I removed the magazine disconnect safety and the key safety (total of 4 parts removed). I then continued on following the "P22 Bible" - I polished the trigger ears and smoothed a few things out so the zinc slide would last longer.
During the process of smoothing out the trigger, I ran across a common problem of the P22 - the double action stopped working completely - I had to do a little filing and stretch out some springs - but I got it working properly. I applied some blue Locktite to the screws and reassembled the pistol.
I bought Rem Oil, Breakfree CLP, and 300 rounds of CCI 40 grain Mini-Mags (round nose) to the range. I also brought a new shooter with me. I loaded up the magazine and fired 10 shots flawlessly, very conformable, fun, and more accurate than I had expected. After 280 rounds though the gun, using both SA and DA there was not one failure. Not one issue at all - even with rapid fire. I did however notice on the target after 280 rounds that a round "keyholed" I went and ran a bore snake though and let my buddy finish up the last 20 rounds without any incidents or problems. (I was pleasantly surprised) After 300 rounds, there is no more visible wear on the zinc slide than there was previously.
My buddy offered to pay for the range fees since he was using my gun and my ammo - thus I got a free trip to the range and I shot around 150 rounds
At aprox $0.04 a round I was very pleased.
This is where I think my report has some value to it:
I own or have owned Glocks, an HK P7M8, AR's, AK's, a Desert Eagle (.50 & .44), FN PS90, hell - it is hard to remember all of them. But for the most part they have all been weapons that have been used in conflicts and can be used for self defense. Every time I get a new gun I take it apart, completely.
The build quality, fit, and finish of the $300 Walther P22 is around the same as the $1000+ DE XIX, if not superior (before my finishing touches of course). A completely different method of being built, yes.
I must say, I am extremely impressed with the performance of this little pistol! I have not tried anything besides those CCI Mini-Mags in there, but if there was a drawback to the P22 it would be that it is finicky on ammo (or so I have read).
It has very quickly risen to one of my favorite firearms (due to price and the fact it is fun to shoot). I now need to buy more magazines and ammo!
