    Fish Oil

I recently took a 2-day handgun course at Front Sight. When I went to clean my XD 45 I realized that I had forgotten to bring anything to lube it. It was late and I didn't want to drive to Wally World so I looked through my stuff for something that would work. What I came up with was a fish oil capsule I take to reduce cholesterol. I slit the gel capsule with my knife and applied it to the slide and reassembled the gun. I fired another 300 rounds the next day with no problems. The gun did smell a little fishy after a while and the pistol rug is now my cat's favorite toy.

I did give it a proper cleaning and lubrication when I got home. Just thought I'd offer this as a data point for others in need of an emergency lubrication source. I would not recommend as a normal practice.

Better be careful. I used fish oil on my glock once. Don't know why, but it changed the look quite a bit.

        Haha, nice thinking there MacGyver.

I dunno if I could stand the smell. Part of why I've switched to Flaxseed Oil vs Fish Oil.

I have used vaseline before on my slide rails. Worked fine for an IDPA match. I really think if your pistol is fit well that just about anything is better than nothing for lube.

I have used oil from my nose/ forehead to lube o-rings on CO2 tanks while playing paintball. A little bit helps.

If you can't get it in, spit on it.

Here's a good article from 2006 on lubes. Note the one he's using in the picture on page 2:

I would have just gotten some oil from the dipstick on my truck, mobile 1 isn't too bad dirty or not. I would be worried about salt in the fish oil

Your gun must have enjoyed all the Omega 3 fatty acids, for good gun health.

Use motor oil next time, like Kurac said.

+1 on engine oil. even if its not synth, it would be a better idea than most anything. hell but a semi auto should function dry.

#1 - you did not need to lube your XD
#2 - you did not need to clean your XD
#3 - they probably had CLP in the instructors box on the table
                            #4 - fishoil - yuck!
when i take the 4 day handgun, i never clean or lube my XD because it is just not necessary. you certainly can, but you don't have to, the gun will go bang every time. JMO.

Whenever I take a class, I usually carry some lube as do a lot of students. Next time just ask, I bet you'll have a choice to select from.
