    Hand Gun Dilemma

I'm currently struggling with my handgun choices. I made the mistake of having gun fever early on and bought a Glock in .40. I loved the gun at first but now that I'm slightly more experienced, I'm seeing that it doesn't fit my hand well. For example, I have to rotate my hand a little to get to the mag release. Not good. I like the Sig P226 and it really fits my hand well but I'm not crazy about the decocker. The XD is ok but there's something about it I don't like - hard to explain - kinda gadgety, gimmicky. I think the gun I'd really like is a 4th generation Glock but it will be forever before they're on the CA "safe gun" list. So, I need to bear down and do some serious comparing. I'm thinking the M&P might be a decent place to start.

I'd like to start shooting some IDPA so that's a consideration. I'll probably go to 9mm so I can shoot more. I like everything about my G22 except the ergos and I have an Advantage Arms 22LR conversion kit on order.

    Thanks for the help.

      hand size

+1 on 1911. If Glock doesnt fit your hands, try a 1911.

I know someday I'm going to go down that road. But, for now, I need to concentrate on 9mm.

You can also get "1911s" in 9 mm. One I don't see on the list is a Beretta 92FS. It can take a while to find one that fits you. Also, there will be the new Sig P250 due to hit CA stores very soon. All kinds of adjustments including calibers. By the way, on the Sig 226, what don't you like about the decocker? It only comes into play typically when you are done shooting.
RIP Louis Awerbuck. I miss you and your training.

I like the feel of the Glock grip but I'm not crazy about the ergos for the mag release. I'm thinking they may have solved this problem with the 4th gen. But, will the 4th gen come to CA ever or soon? Is it possible the M&P and 4th gen Glock are brothers?

I haven't shot the Beretta so I'll put it on the list. That's really good news about the Sig P250. Do you know when it will be available to the general public?

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the way the 226 feels and fits my hand and I shoot it better than all of the guns I routinely shoot. The reason I'm not crazy about the decocker is that I haven't used it in a "stressful" situation like IDPA shoot or any type of defensive handgun course application. It's just that I haven't practiced the automatic sweep of the decocker prior to holstering the gun. And, since wearing a holster will be a new addition for me, I'm thinking the decocker sweep prior to holstering complicates things for a beginner like me. That said, I am highly conscious and aware about the position of my trigger finger.

I want the basic fire control functions of my Glock that feels like a Sig P226 in my hand.

Just add an extended mag release. About $3 and 10 second install. Also an extended slide stop makes a huge difference. Make sure you use factory Glock parts.

Have you tried a Browning HiPower? Maybe a CZ75?

Words right outa my mouth Ed. Controls of a glock feel like the sig. Though my browning needs some trigger work.

Robar, it may look ugly but easy function will dominate over beauty.

If you decide on the MP, which is a great gun overall, be prepared to get some trigger work done. Asides from the trigger, I really like my MP. If you buy before the end of may you get a choice of a 50 dollar mail-in rebate or two magazines from one of their promotions they have going on.

The M&P's are great, esp. in 9mm, however, note, if you plan to use it in IDPA/IPSC matches, the mag safety feature (required by CA) is kind of a pain when showing "unload & clear, slide forward, HAMMER DOWN" during competition; you'll have to show and insert a completely empty mag back in order to release the "hammer down". There are after market "techniques" however in disabling this feature. Just an FYI to consider.

If I may but in and ask you a question, is the only indication that the pistol doesn't fit your hand is that you have to reposition to hit the magazine release? It is standard practice to reposition your hand to release the magazine, even in the 1911. The only handguns I know of that don't are the HK USPs and their ilk and those that have the European style release at the bottom.
