Para 1911 LOLZ FAIL

i rented a Para P14 (i think) at On Target (OC) on saturday. It's basically a 1911 with a double stack magazine.

I get the .45's loaded into the magazine and pop it into the pistol as usual. The second I pulled my hand away and started to raise the pistol to aim, THE BOTTOM OF MAGAZINE FLEW OUT! and i mean FLEW, with all the force of the loaded up spring. my .45's were rolling all over the ground. the spring was over here, the bottom was over there and 45's were everwhere. grrrr... I guess its better than an epic fail involving it blowing up in my hands...

I guess its forgiveable considering hundreds of rounds are put through it every day, thousands a month, but still COME ON! i cant stop imagining actually NEEDING it in the middle of the night and all my .45's rolling around at my feet maybe we can talk it out?? ha

Luckily a springfield mil-spec was back on the shelf when i brought back my basket of disassembled magaine parts... I like it better anyway

Mid/late 1990s, the FBI HRT put out a RFP for a new sidearm (.45ACP SAO with large capacity mags) to replace their well used Novak customized Browning High Powers.

After much testing, they selected the Les Baer (customized Para-Ordnance) P-13.45 SRT.
During training, FBI HRT members reported failures with the new pistols. Failures were attributed to the double stack 1911 magazines.
They were never able to make them more reliable and the FBI HRT went back to using their Novak BHPs.

Due to the bad experiences with the double stack 1911 magazines, when the FBI SWAT/HRT put out a new RFP for a sidearm (.45ACP SAO), it specified the use of a single stack magazine.

Do you mean the Para Ordnance Warthog? I've shot that gun at On Target & it worked fine for me, but of course, everyone's mileage varies.

Regardless, it doesn't give much good press to Para Ordnance.

they settled on the same pistol that their SWAT teams are using...the commercial version is the Springfield Professional

Para-Ord has had problems for years. it's amazing that folks still buy them and expect them to hold up...it's almost as bad as expecting the Sig 238 to work

This happened to me on one of my Novak magazines while at the range! Spring flew out and everything.

I've purchased & owned more Para's (late 90's versions) than I care to admit...only have 3 now though.

I wish my only problem was a blown out mag. Instead I can't get one (of the 3 I have remaining) to even get through a mag or two W/O FTF issues. That's after going to Para once. That's a P14.45 limited. My P12.45 & P13.45 shoot OK now, after smiths worked them over (at least once?).

I have friends that bought during the same period, and some love them...

The shame is that I have many (LEGAL) hi-cap mags!!!

I have been switching away, to SIG P220's. Love that pistol...(and a FiveSeven, LOL).

Buddy has that pistol. Seems to work fine for him. I thought about getting one but the fat butt kinda scared me off. Ended up getting a CZ97B and could not be happier.

While shooting IDPA with a Walther P99, I went to my mag pouch for a reload, and proceeded to tear the base plate off the spare mag.

You could hear the cackle of laughter as mag parts and multiple rounds of .40 S&W went flying straight up in the air.

It can happen with any mag that uses a polymer base plate. I hadn't heard it being endemic with Para double-stacks, though.

I have a p-16 40 limited and I run standard capacity 16 round mags (not the nuetered 10 rounders). The gun works great.

I wouldnt judge anything on a rental There all worn out.

Reads like it has nothing to do with the gun, but a problem with a worn out magazine pad.

Para's aren't as reliable as other 1911's there are a lot better choices to make when purchasing a 1911.

What ammo were you shooting? I've had my Para P-14 for the past 3 years and she has had ten of thousands of rounds down the pipe, and I've used it in all kinds of weather and climates, with no problems.
Once had the mag blow out of my Kimber TLE/RL II but that was due to over charged reloads, which is the problem I suspect here.

+1 for PARA (when you get a good one and modify it a little with Wilson internals)
