CZ-75 SP01 vs Glock 17 vs ???

I own a Glock 30 and like it a lot, I just shot my first IDPA match and it became obvious that while my gun is good for self defense, it's not the best pick for that kind of sport. Most of the people were shooting 9mm or .40 and were shooting full sized guns. I want to pick up a gun to use for IDPA, IPSC, USPSA etc. I'm leaning towards 9mm because it's cheap, readily available, and has less recoil. A Glock 34 was the first thing I though of but it's not legal for IPSC production class. Some of the top shooters are using SP01's in IPSC production and doing very well. I know it needs a trigger job, but after that it supposed to be a great gun. A Glock 17 is also high on my list as I know they are good guns, I'm already familiar with the platform, and it doesn't need much to be ready to go...maybe a 3.5# disconnector. I've heard lots of other suggestions...XD9, MP9, Sig 226.....Dry firing side by side I still think the Glock has a better trigger than an XD. I have small to medium size hands so a gun that fits my hands well is a must. I'm on a tight budget and will end up picking a gun and then saving for it, so the less expensive it is the sooner I'll own it. What are your thoughts CalGuns?

Anyone in the Bay Area with a gun they think I should try, please let me know, I'll happily supply ammo.

It's tough to beat a Glock for gun games, IMHO. The trigger reset, reliability, and low bore axis make for a fantastic combination. Plus, you have easy, cheap, and readily found upgrades.

And I have a Matt Mink SP-01, too.

The USA affiliation of IPSC is USPSA. The G34 is legal in Production Class in USPSA's rulebook. Unless you were gonna shoot internationally, I dont think it's something you need to really be concerned with..

On that note, don't go buy a new gun thinking it will somehow magically transform you into a better shooter. New shooters always get the idea that having the latest/greatest gear is somehow going to make them better shooters. Having the right gear plays an integral part of being successful, but it' doesn't make you a better shot..

I would suggest you use and shoot what's cheap/available to you.. You'll obviously get a lot of differing opinions, but this of advice was given to me by a friend who's been doing competitive shooting for the last 15+ years..

You can always stick to your G30 and buy some reloading supplies. There are guys that shoot the G26 at GSSF matches

I understand that a new gun won't make me a better shooter....but shooting a 9 vs 45 will be cheaper and let me shoot more, plus shooting a full sized gun can't hurt a bit. I refer to the IPSC Production Division List http//www.ipsc.org/proddiv.php which clearly states the G34 is a no go. I will be shooting IPSC at Richmond Rod and Gun.

I can buy a Glock 17 with a GSSF discount for $420 NIB.....which equates to 2K rounds of 9mm or 1K of .45, so buying a new gun will quickly pay for itself in ammo savings. I know I could buy a reloading press, and I plan to, after I get a more economical pistol to shoot the heck out of.

Actually if you read my post I said reloading. Reloading will make .45ACP very cheap. Just giving you a suggestion but it seems like you want to buy a G17. If that's the case just buy it and enjoy.

Reloading 45 will still be more expensive that reloading 9mm.

If you are set on the G17, go with it. Ultimately, it is the shooter, but you can't go wrong with a G17. Not a bad price at all.

lols..yes yes..i agree a fullsize gun will be MUCH MUCH better than a g30.. I shoot whats' cheap so I completely understand you wanting to shoot a 9mm over the .45 as well..

As for shooting IPSC, if you're shooting in the U.S. then its' USPSA. That's the ruling body for IPSC here in the states. Go ask a club member you trust about IPSC/USPSA rules. The link you're showing is for IPSC and not USPSA. We use the terms pretty loosely here in the U.S. but if you're shooting IPSC in the U.S., you're going to be using USPSA rules.

I hope that made sense? I've never personally shot up at Richmond, but my buddy has- he indicated they have a very solid pistol group. Im more than sure they'll be able to help you figure out the rules in better detail.

That does help, and yes it seems the point of rules is to confuse the NooB........this set here....that set there....Either way a fullsize gun will be easier to shoot. I thought about a 1911 but when I did the reloading math 9mm bullets are just way cheaper, primers are about the same, and powder is about .01 difference.....so it's really all about what bullets I can get the cheapest. I won't even open the can of worms about which reloading press to buy or I'll have every Dillon fanboy on CGN screaming from the rooftops.......
