A 1911 built to original mil-spec tolerances (loose) will be just as reliable as any modern semi-auto. I have a 1942 remington rand that will feed anything it was designed for and will do so filthy or clean. It would have not been favored by so many for so long if not. By your low post count and tactless attitude i figure you for a troll. Are their newer and more current designs out there now? for sure? As many as proven as a 1911. NO. Keep your comments and bashing to yourself.

Wow, you can use Google to post the same lame criticisms from people, like yourself, who have never owned an XD? You're a rocket scientist.

And you completely missed the point about 1911s and XDs, which I won't bother to explain. Perhaps you should try reading the posts.

I'd say unburnt powder...used to burn the heck out of my hand.

I had a similar problem with my m1911 whenever I used "hot" loads. I forget what amount of grains they were. I haven't had the problem once I went with 230 grain loads

All I can tell you is that none of my M&P's do that.

I would get it looked at.

Ironic considering you proudly mention the Apex sear, which is virtually required to compensate for the horrible M&P trigger.
M&Ps are good enough for any work, as are the any of the tupperware pistols. These arguments are so silly, it sounds like little kids arguing about who's dad is better. That being said, the fact that the M&P is made in the USA is a plus over the XD, but the XD does a good job as well. Besides, California says they are OK and thats what matters.

As for 1911's, for any carry work, they suck unless they have a firing pin safety of some sort. I would put up a glock 35 with a bit of trigger work and a match grade bbl to a 1911 any day.

If you have a problem carrying a 1911 then you are either not trained or poorly trained. It has been proven time and time again that they wont fire when dropped with the safety engaged. I dont know where you guys are getting your info but you are way off base. They dont take thousands of dollars in smithing to run right nor are they any more unsafe than any other semi auto if you know what the hell you are doing. Most of the people who take issue with 1911's either never owned one and are just parroting what they read on the net or bought something so far removed from Mr. Browning's original design its a wonder it even still called a 1911.

Now back on topic before the thread drift. The op's M&P sounds like the lockup and timing issue. you shouldnt be getting unburnt powder on you at all. Either that or the chamber is out of spec as others have mentioned. even with the dirtiest range stuff shouldnt be burning you. S&W make a good product so you should send it back and see what they say. My guess is its something minor. I am sure they will remedy it.
