First handgun help

If your price range is around $400, look for a sig p6/225. Awesome for the money and it's 9mm.

The best thing to do though, is try to rent or borrow to try out all of the handguns in your price range. You should pick the one you like the best after trying it out.

There are plenty of other semi's you could be looking at (used). Things like the Ruger P89 or the older s&w semi autos.

Don't overlook used. Here in Sandawg 3 shops leap to mind. American Shooting Center, El Cajon Gun Exchange and Duncan's Gun Works. All three have some good used handguns. If you're patient and have a good idea of what you're looking for, good deals can be had.

FWIW, of my four handguns the worst in terms of reliability is the only one of the three I bought new, a Ruger KP90. Of course, two of the other three are old S&W wheelguns...

My first handgun was a glock 19. I had it for 11 years now and have put thousands of rounds through it. No failure to fire's. I haven't had to replace any parts whatsoever yet. I have had 3 or 4 failure to feed'sdue to using some crappy after market magazines (promag) They suck, don't buy them. Stick with factory glock mags. I clean it after every 500 rounds or so but it could probably use less cleaning. They're tough and reliable. Hope this helps.

I was just at ASC and they didnt have much of a selection let alone used guns for sale. Duncans gun works is in san marcos correct?

ASC gets a bit of turnover. Be patient & visit often.

Duncan's is in San Marcos and worth the drive just to drool at their collectables.

FWIW I browse a lot & can't recall ever seeing a used Glock in the consignment case. Dunno if that says more about the gun or the people that buy them.

Ruger P89, S&W Sigma series, S&W 59 or 5906, etc. There are also a bunch of 38/.357 revolvers to look at as well. Lots of stuff to try out if you are taking your time and looking around.

For Under $400

I'd check the Classified here at Calguns and wait for a used but not abused Glock 9mm. A Glock over an M&P or XD because its relatively easier to find someone who can quickly and cheaply fix any major issues (even learn to do it yourself).

New, I'd take my chances with a Ruger P95.

Unless you have a specific reason for the P38 (WWII buff) I'd just prefer a more modern design since more modern designs were designed with modern defense loads in mind.

And there will be more pistols in the future, but for now I'm looking for something to mess around with. I wouldn't put my life into a $160 handgun, but for shooting soda cans, why not.

If you don't have a lot of money - and you don't really know what you want - then I'd suggest buying a Ruger 22LR pistol. ( I like the 22/45s. ) Inexpensive to buy and shoot, accurate, and durable - these things run forever. It's an ideal platform for learning how to shoot a handgun. It's also deadly on soda cans.

While you practice with the Ruger, you can familiarize yourself with the market and save up for a handgun that you really want. And the nice thing is, once you finally buy that handgun, you'll probably still want to keep the Ruger around because it's such a nice gun to shoot.
